FULL-TIME: Man Utd 4-1 Newcastle

For Man Utd fans that game had absolutely everything: Ronaldo goals, drama and an emphatic win by a big margin.

On the other hand, Newcastle fans have every right to feel hard done by. Lingard's goal was great, but poor goalkeeping and sloppy defending let them down for both Ronaldo's goals while Fernandes had all the time in the world to size up the shot he scored from.

For most of the game Newcastle were equal to Man Utd and looked to have as good of a chance as winning it, so their fans will understandably be fuming with that scoreline.

Manquillo sends in a cross from the right but Saint-Maximin can't connect with it, but it falls to Ritchie on the left and there's no one to connect with his cross either.

51'

Saint-Maximin picks up from where he left off by gliding from deep towards the left wing. His eventual cross is dealt with comfortably by Varane though.

47'

Silky skill from Pogba, who then feeds Wan-Bissaka with a deft through ball, but no one makes a run to meet the right-back's pass across goal.

Although it's the Ronaldo show for obvious reasons, his former Real Madrid teammate Raphael Varane is quietly enjoying a very good Old Trafford debut himself.

HALF-TIME: Man Utd 1-0 Newcastle

It was an exciting half throughout, with both teams looking dangerous and exposed on the counter, but Man Utd didn't test Woodman in the Newcastle goal anywhere near enough. GOAL!!!

WHO ELSE? Need I even say his name? A dream return to Old Trafford for Ronaldo!!

Greenwood's low shot from range is parried by Woodman and Ronaldo arrives on scene - just as the scriptwriters wanted - to tap in the rebound.

42'

Matic has a shot from outside of the box, but it's blocked by a defender before it can reach Woodman.

39'

Fernandes darts in a low cross from the right and it's a miracle how no one got a touch on that!

38'

Saint-Maximin is one-on-one with Wan-Bissaka down the right wing. Saint-Maximin squares it to the onrushing Longstaff, who loses his footing inside the box.

36'

Newcastle have a free-kick from deep. It's punted into the box and lands at Saint-Maximin's feet just outside the box after a bit of pinball, but he drags his shot wide.

30'

CLOSE AGAIN! Man Utd break once more, with Sancho cutting inside and having his shot blocked for a corner.

29'

CLOSE! This is so end-to-end right now!

Fernandes tries another shot from range, albeit nowhere near as far back as his own half, but he scuffs it into the direction of Sancho who can't guide it goalwards.

27'

CHANCE! Newcastle are showing so much intent! Willock nicks it off Fernandes, makes his way into the box, sees his name in lights and does his best Jonny Wilkinson impression. He had a clear sight of goal and Joelinton to his left too...

25'

NOW THAT WAS AUDACIOUS!

Fernandes spots Woodman slightly off his line and takes aim from just inside his own half! Luckily for the Newcastle keeper it flies over the bar.

24'

Saint-Maximin has been causing Man Utd lots of problems so far! This time he delivers a great cross into the box, but there's no teammate of his there to meet it.

23'

Newcastle do well on the counter again! Ronaldo is denied twice before the away side race up the other end, but a deflection takes the sting out of Ritchie's shot and it rolls through to De Gea.

21'

Another corner from Shaw, but this one's much less dangerous, sailing over Ronaldo's head.

19'

CLOSE! Shaw whips in a corner from the left and Varane's diving header trickles past the goal. Great movement from the French defender!

15'

Ronaldo has his pockets picked in the middle of the pitch, which spurs a counter attack with Saint-Maximin charging at the Man Utd defence. He passes it to Ritchie, who opts for a lacklustre shot blocked by a defender instead of freeing Almiron down the left.

11'

The Glazers no longer in the Man Utd fans' line of fire! Who'd have thought?

10'

CLOSE! Great work from Ronaldo.

Starting on the edge of the box, he showcases some brilliant footwork and a turn of pace to get past a couple of defenders and into the box, but he's narrowed his shooting angle too much and his shot hits the side netting.

8'

Pogba picks out Fernandes with a long pass but it's slightly overhit, so Fernandes struggles to control it with his head.

7'

CLOSE! First chance of the game for Newcastle, as Varane misjudges the flight of the ball, allowing Joelinton to produce a lovely touch and piece of skill to cut inside from the left and shoot. It's a weak effort though.

4'

Ronaldo is almost put through on goal but he can't get his feet sorted and the ball rolls away from him. He's flagged for offside though anyway.

3'

Matic does a quick one-two with Ronaldo, which as his first touch of the game is greeted by cheers.

The Serb follows that with a lovely through ball to Wan-Bissaka into space on the right flank, but the cross finds a Newcastle head.

THE RONALDO FACTOR

14:45

WHAT HAPPENED IN RONALDO'S LAST GAME FOR MAN UTD?

An unhappy memory for most Man Utd fans, it was indeed a 2-0 Champions League final loss against Barcelona in 2009.

Starters from that game such as John O'Shea, Anderson and Park Ji-Sung would perhaps not get into this United side at their peak, but the likes of Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Edwin van der Sar surely would!

THE WORLD IS WATCHING

WHAT HAVE NEWCASTLE SAID ABOUT FACING RONALDO?

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce referred to Ronaldo as "totally unbelievable", but also insisted that his side try to "spoil the party" in an opportunity that his players "should relish".

RONALDO'S RECORD AGAINST NEWCASTLE

It's safe to say CR7 has always enjoyed playing against Newcastle, boasting 6 goals and 5 assists in 11 games versus them.

Last time he faced them was 4th March 2009 - a 2-1 away win for Man Utd in which Ronaldo had an uncharacteristically quiet game.

After Peter Lovenkrands put the Magpies ahead within the first 10 minutes, goals from Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov secured the win for Man Utd.

Back then Ronaldo played as a winger in a 4-4-2 system, but he's a very different player now!

NEWCASTLE TEAM NEWS

And here are the men looking to spoil the party!

Steve Bruce makes four changes to the team who drew 2-2 with Southampton before the international break, with Callum Wilson's injury forcing him to field Joelinton as Allan Saint-Maximin's strike partner.

The midfield is unchanged but the five-man defence has been completely reshuffled, as Ciaran Clark, an out of position Isaac Hayden and Javier Manquillo replace Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Jacob Murphy.

14:07

MAN UTD TEAM NEWS

Ronaldo goes straight into the starting line-up for his second Man Utd debut, slotting in as a central striker in Solskjaer's favoured 4-2-3-1 situation!

Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood and CR7's international teammate Bruno Fernandes feature as the trio behind him, which means Paul Pogba is forced back into a deeper role in a midfield duo with Nemanja Matic.

In terms of defence, Solskjaer has gone for the tried and trusted partnerships in front of De Gea.
