Exclusive: Alexis Mac Allister on Liverpool move and Jurgen Klopp's desire to sign him - ‘Money not the biggest thing’

Alexis Mac Allister says that Jurgen Klopp’s desire to bring him to Anfield, rather than the money, was a crucial factor in his decision to join Liverpool.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a fantastic 2022/23 campaign after helping Brighton to their best league finish and winning the World Cup with Argentina.

A move to Merseyside topped everything off for the midfielder, and he revealed his ambitions for the season ahead before Liverpool’s match against Wolves at Molineux – a game you can watch live on TNT Sports.

“It is an amazing year for me, I achieved a lot of good things, World Cup, to qualify for Europe with Brighton and then sign for Liverpool,” he told TNT Sports.

“[It was] pretty special for me. I've been training and working really hard to get to this place. I try to be a better person and a better player every day and I'm really happy and really proud of what I'm doing now.

“It was easy [to move to Liverpool] because the club and the manager made it easy because from the first moment, they showed a real desire for me and that was so important because in football, money is a big thing, but sometimes it's not the biggest thing.

"The manager, the club showed a real desire, real interest, and I'm really grateful for that.”

Mac Allister is enjoying playing in a deeper role this season behind the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo, and believes he is having a good influence on the game as more of a defensive midfielder.

He said: “I like it [playing in a deeper role], of course I've got to defend a little bit more, but that's not a problem for me because I'm a team player.

“It's so important for the players to understand the game and that's what I try to improve every day. Then you can play as an eight, six or 10, wherever.

“Now I'm playing as a six, which is a new position for me, but it's a position I really like, I can do it and I can help the team from there.”

The Argentina international believes Liverpool must set their sights on the biggest trophies this season, with UEFA Champions League qualification and a Premier League title challenge his two main priorities.

“As every big team, you want to aim very high, we've got an important competition like the Europa League and then the Premier League of course," he said. "We want to get this club back into the Champions League.

“So we have to aim very high and that's what we are trying, try to go step-by-step, win every game and then the future we will see. But of course, at this big club, we will fight for everything.

“We all know how important the Premier League is, it's a whole year, and when it's that long, the best team gets the trophy.

“We are still improving and we are really happy with our performances so far. That's 100% our aim.”
