Liverpool snatching a top-four spot from Manchester United would be “unreal”, says Jermaine Jenas, considering “how far gone” The Reds’ season appeared to be.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have had a difficult campaign, but a late-season surge - combined with United’s stuttering form - has put them back in the frame for an unexpected Champions League place.
Liverpool are one point behind United in fifth ahead of the weekend’s action, but The Red Devils, who lost their last two games to West Ham and Brighton, have a game in hand.
Speaking about the prospect of Liverpool performing a late leapfrog in a season where they also humiliated their rivals with a 7-0 win at Anfield in March, former Tottenham and England midfielder Jenas said it doesn’t bear thinking about for United fans.
“It would be unreal,” Jenas said on BT Sport.
“When you think about Liverpool’s season and how far gone it was at one point, to think that they could snatch it from their arch-rivals, whether it’s the last game of the season or whatever, you wouldn’t want to be a Man Utd fan – put it that way.”
Liverpool are on a six-match winning streak in the Premier League ahead of their trip to Leicester on Monday, while United have just one victory in their last four outings.
The form of Erik ten Hag’s side on the road has been a concern, with just two away wins in their last nine attempts.
But Jenas believes the run-in suggests United will be able to get over the line, with home games against Wolves, Chelsea and Fulham to come and just one away trip to Bournemouth.
“I think United are going to be saved by the fact they’ve got three home games out of the four left,” Jenas said.
He added: “They are [all very winnable games]. But they’re on some ridiculous run away from home where they can’t get a result.
“They could go and get beat by Bournemouth, [who will be] in party mode. The other day against Chelsea, that game could have gone either way against Bournemouth. They had just as many chances.
“There’s no guarantees there, but I just think that the fact they’re at home for three games, they’ll win them.”
United failed to qualify for the Champions League for the current season, but Ten Hag spoke on Friday about how their improvement this term has led to “many quality players” showing interest in joining his side in the summer.
