Wolves have confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha on a loan deal with an obligation to buy for £44 million.
The Brazilian becomes Wolves’ new manager Julen Lopetegui’s first signing for the club to replace Bruno Lage after the team struggled this season.
The 23-year-old joins from Atletico Madrid after failing to get a regular first team spot under Diego Simeone in the current Liga campaign after joining in 2021.
Before Atletico he played for Sion in Switzerland and RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin in the German Bundesliga.
Cunha is a gold medallist from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last season and has eight international caps, but was not part of the squad for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
“I’m excited to play in the Premier League, to play in Wolverhampton, and I think the most important point is that I’m happy like a kid," said Cunha. "[Lopetegui’s] a big coach, he has a big mentality.
“He told me about him joining Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton having a big project and I took to the project, I believe in it a lot, and I believe in him. I also believe in the players, and I believe in the club.
“The situation I’ve come into is not the best one. We need to take a little bit more points. But I believe in the club, I believe a lot in the coach, the mentality he has and he has many things to do here in Wolverhampton with the players, but the quality of the players is unbelievable.
Discussing his former Atletico teammate Diego Costa, who is now also at Wolves, he said. “He’s a very good guy, a really smiley guy, a really Brazilian guy and we’re always smiling together.
“I called him and he said to me: ‘Come, come. Please, please.’”
The Brazilian will complete a deal that could run until 2027.
Wolves sit bottom of the Premier League and play Everton on Boxing Day.
