Midfielder Joelinton signs new long-term Newcastle United contract - ‘I love playing for the club’

Joelinton said joining Newcastle United was the "best decision of his career" after he signed a new long-term contract at the club. The Brazil international has played 179 times for The Magpies and said he felt "very happy" to extend his stay at St. James' Park. After the announcement, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said he hoped to see the midfielder in black and white "for many years to come”.
Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton has signed a new contract at St. James’ Park.
The 27-year-old signed for the Premier League club in 2019 and after putting pen to paper on a new deal this week, said joining The Magpies was “the best decision of his career”.
The length of Joelinton’s new deal was not disclosed, but Newcastle have said the Brazil international has signed a long-term agreement.
"I feel great," Joelinton told the club’s website. "I feel very happy and my family is happy.”
“A lot of things have happened in my years here. I've learnt a lot and grown a lot, and for me to come here to Newcastle was the best decision of my career.
"I love playing for the club. I love the club, I love the fans. We had a lot of discussions and I always wanted to be here. I'm glad to continue and I hope to have success in the years to come."
After joining Newcastle as a forward for £40 million on a six-year deal, Joelinton initially struggled to find his form in front of goal. He managed just 10 goals in his first 80 appearances, with his future on Tyneside in doubt.
When Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce at St. James’ Park in 2021, Joelinton transformed into a box-to-box midfielder with huge success.
He received an abundance of praise for his performances and won the club’s Player of the Year award in the 2021/22 season.
Joelinton has now played for the club 179 times and still chips in with goal contributions, scoring 25 times and providing 15 assists.
"This has been a big priority for us off the pitch and I'm absolutely delighted Joelinton has committed his future to the club,” Howe said.
"Joey is an exceptional player and person, and the love he has for the club is reciprocated by all of us here. He brings unique qualities to the group and undoubtedly makes us stronger.
"I'd like to thank everyone involved behind the scenes for bringing this to a swift and positive conclusion. We are all excited to see Joelinton in a Newcastle shirt for many years to come."
Last season, Joelinton played a key role in the club’s return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 years.
This season has not gone so smoothly, with Joelinton being one of several key players to have missed large parts of the season through injury.
He missed over a month of action between October and December with a hamstring problem and was sidelined for a lengthy period after suffering a groin injury in an FA Cup win over Sunderland in January’s Tyne-Wear Derby.
The Brazilian required surgery and has not played since, with Newcastle currently fighting for back-to-back European finishes.
They host top-four hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday at St. James’ Park, live on TNT Sports and discovery+, as Howe’s side look to break into the top six.
