Former Italy forward Luca Toni announces retirement after 22 years as a player

Luca Toni has announced he will retire at the end of the season after admitting the time was right to finish his well-travelled career.

The striker will turn 39 in May 2016 and was joint Capocannoniere last term with Inter’s Mauro Icardi on 22 Serie A goals.
“I think the time has come to stop,” Toni told Sky Sport Italia.
“I hope to celebrate it by keeping Verona safe in Serie A.”
It will be difficult, as Hellas are propping up the table and the only side still without a victory after 15 rounds.
Toni is well-travelled since leaving hometown club Modena, going through Empoli, Fiorenzuola, Lodigiani, Treviso, Vicenza, Brescia, Palermo, Fiorentina, Bayern Munich, Roma, Genoa, Juventus and Al-Nasr.
He joined Verona in the summer of 2013 as a free agent.
Toni won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, the same year he won the Golden Boot as Europe’s top club goalscorer.
