Mauro Icardi scored a stoppage time winner as Inter claimed a dramatic derby win over rivals AC Milan at San Siro.
The game looked destined to finish in stalemate, with the two sides cancelling each other out as the full time whistle approached. But Icardi made the difference late on, making the most of an error by Gianluigi Donnarumma to head home into the empty net.
Stefan de Vrij came closest to opening the scoring before that, looping a shot on to the crossbar in a first half marred by the injury to Radja Nainggolan, with the Belgian midfielder forced off after just 28 minutes.
Both teams had offside goals correctly ruled out, although Lucas Biglia could have been sent off for a series of yellow card-worthy tackles. The deadlocked remained unbroken until late on, with both teams tiring, until Donnarumma got caught underneath a cross, allowing Icardi a free header into an empty net.

TALKING POINT - How will injuries affect Inter ahead of their trip to face Barcelona?

This was a huge win for the Nerazzurri, but it came with a cost. Nainggolan was withdrawn through injury in the first half, with Marcelo Brozovic also bandaged up at the half time break. Then Ivan Perisic looked to be in pain as he hobbled after 70 minutes. Inter now face the prospect of playing Barcelona in the Champions League next week with three of their most important players on the sidelines.

MAN OF THE MATCH - Mauro Icardi (Inter)

The Argentinean striker is earning himself quite the reputation for deciding these matches. This wasn’t Icardi’s best display in an Inter shirt, but he was a threat in the first half, when he received service from the wings, and delivered the match-defining moment in stoppage time at the end of the match. Icardi is Inter’s most prolific striker since the days of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and he showed that here.
