Internazionale 0-1 Fiorentina: I Viola continue impressive run of form with Inter win in Serie A

Fiorentina beat Inter 1-0 and extended their winning run across all competitions to eight games.

The first big chance of the game fell to Gaetano Castrovilli who fired a vicious volley on target which was brilliantly saved by Andre Onana.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a huge chance to put Inter ahead after 22 minutes. The Armenian ran 50 yards with the ball, beat three Fiorentina players before entering the penalty area and seeing his shot saved by Pietro Terracciano.

Inter spurned another huge chance just five minutes into the second half, the ball was fizzed across the face of goal by Alessandro Bastoni and Romelu Lukaku somehow put it wide from just a couple of yards out.

Less than five minutes later, the Viola made Inter pay for their missed opportunities by going 1-0 up. Arthur Cabral's initial header was saved by Onana but Giacomo Bonaventura was on hand to head home the rebound.

Simone Inzaghi's side came within inches of equalising on the hour mark, the ball bounced up for Nicolo Barella who struck a terrific effort on the volley which cannoned off the post and back into play.

Inter continued to push but Fiorentina held on for their first Serie A win against the Nerazzurri since 2017.

Inter really aren't enjoying their football at the moment as they enter a really critical part of the season. Today's result means Inter have now lost three consecutive Serie A matches, lost four of their last five and have also lost back to back games at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. This match was a chance not only for Inter to jump above Lazio, at least temporarily, but more importantly to put more distance between themselves and the teams below them who are also pursuing a UEFA Champions League place. Ultimately though, it's a chance they've spurned. Milan and Atalanta are just two points behind the Nerazzurri, while Roma are one point further back as the battle for top four gets even more interesting.

The Fiorentina captain was the match-winner for his side today and he was terrific all afternoon. He made some clever passes into the final third to try and get his side into promising positions and progress them up the pitch. His winning goal was a result of him being alive in the penalty area and then pouncing on the rebound. A huge goal to give the Viola a precious win at the San Siro.

13' HUGE SAVE FROM ONANA! - A big saves from the Inter goalkeeper to keep the game at 0-0. Castrovilli struck a terrific volley but the keeper was equal to it.

22' NEARLY AN UNBELIEVABLE GOAL! - Henrikh Mkhitaryan latches onto the ball near the halfway line, beats two men, gets into the box and cuts inside but sees his effort saved! He had Lukaku open but that would have been an unbelievable goal.

50' INTER MISS A SITTER! - That HAD to be a goal! The ball is fizzed across the face of goal to Lukaku who somehow puts it wide from just a couple of yards out. That is a huge let off for Fiorentina and a huge miss for Inter.

53' GOAL - FIORENTINA - Giacomo Bonaventura has fired his side ahead! The corner comes in and Cabral sees his header saved by Onana but Bonaventura is on hand to head home.

59' OFF THE POST! - The free kick from Brozovic is blocked by the wall and it falls to Barella who strikes it on the volley and it cannons back off the post!

73' A HUGE SAVE! - Bellanova arrives in the box and connects from close range but Terracciano is equal to it! A brilliant save to deny Inter what looked a certain equaliser.

Fiorentina have now taken 16 points from their last 18 available in Serie A.
