Lazio produced a smash-and-grab performance on the road as goals from Matteo Guendouzi and Danilo Cataldi beat Torino 2-0 to close within five points of Serie A’s top four.
Torino had not been beaten at home in the league since October, but failed to make the most of their first-half dominance as they remained down in 10th.
in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, Maurizio Sarri’s men were back in domestic action.
Lazio had won just one of their previous four league games and were immediately put on the back foot as Antonio Sanabria hit the bar inside five minutes.
Torino controlled the first 45 minutes but were undone by a familiar lack of goal threat up front and were punished by a fast start to the second period from the visitors.
Luis Alberto was the creator for both goals. The Spanish midfielder’s pass was cleverly left by Ciro Immobile to roll into the path of Guendouzi and he fired low and hard across Vanja Milinkovic-Savic for his third goal of the season.
Just five minutes later it was 2-0. This time Alberto’s pass across the edge of the box was swept into the bottom corner by Cataldi.
Lazio were forced to see out the final 10 minutes plus stoppage time a man down after Mario Gila was shown a second yellow card for chopping down Duvan Zapata inches outside the area.
Samuele Ricci came closest to setting up a grandstand finish when he fired just wide from Nikola Vlasic's lay-off.
But Sarri's side held out to climb above Fiorentina, who they face next on Monday, into seventh and within one point of local rivals Roma.
Victory would have taken Torino above Lazio in the table, but just a second defeat in 12 games leaves Il Toro on the fringes of the fight for a place in Europe next season.
They are also not in action again until Monday when they travel to Roma.
