However, if you were glancing through the Serie A fixtures this weekend, you might have been surprised to see that there are no Italian games taking place this Sunday, March 31.

Why are there no Serie A games on Sunday? It’s actually quite simple.

There are no Serie A games on Sunday, March 31 because of Easter Sunday.

Unlike other major European leagues, there has been a long-standing belief within Italian football that time off at Christmas and Easter to be with family is important for everyone, including footballers and those working at clubs.

So that is why there are no Serie A games on Sunday, March 31.

In previous years, the round of fixtures have been played on the Friday and Saturday, or even just entirely on the Saturday, but this year the games will be played on Saturday, March 30 and Monday, April 1.

The Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 will all play games on Sunday, March 31.

The Eredivisie and Liga Portugal will also play games, albeit the latter only has one game with none of the big four (Porto, Benfica, Sporting, Braga) playing.

Traditionally, Serie A has played with a winter break, but changes to the calendar recently have brought an end to that in favour of fewer midweek rounds.

This year, games were played on December 22/23 and December 29/30.
