Tuesday’s Paper Round leads on the prospect of Gareth Southgate leaving England next year, and the FA’s ‘dream’ of appointing Pep Guardiola in his place among a list of other potential candidates. Elsewhere, Al-Ittihad hope a bid pushing £200m can tempt Liverpool into selling Mohamed Salah before the Saudi transfer window closes and Donny van de Beek is being linked with Galatasaray.

Southgate set to walk after Euro 2024, FA ‘dream’ of Pep appointment

England manager Gareth Southgate looks set to walk away from the role after next year’s Euro 2024, and the FA could try and lure Pep Guardiola from Manchester City according to the Daily Mail. Southgate’s future beyond the tournament is uncertain with his contract expiring at the end of next year, and among a list of possible candidates, the FA have a stunning appointment in mind.
The Mail writes: "The dream appointment of some at the FA is Pep Guardiola - an option officials are open to exploring.
“Compiling a succession plan appears to be more relevant given Southgate's contract expires at the end of next year. [Eddie] Howe, [Graham] Potter, [Mauricio] Pochettino and [Brendan] Rodgers are likely to remain viable options but FA officials are also keen on testing the water with Guardiola.
“The Manchester City manager's deal expires in 2025 - 12 months after Euro 2024. That provides an obstacle to the FA, as would his wages for an organisation still clawing back Covid losses of up to £300 million.
“But Guardiola's public support for Catalan independence may create political barriers which stop him being offered the Spain job. And having managed City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, where else is there for him to go? The FA can offer him one place.”

Al-Ittihad make astonishing £215m bid for Salah

A Saudi Arabian delegation from Pro League side Al-Ittihad arrived in London on Saturday in a bid to persuade Liverpool to sell Mohamed Salah, The Sun reports. After an offer of £150m was rejected, there is hope that a bid that could reach a staggering £215m might tempt Liverpool into selling.
The Sun adds: "They are desperate to land the Egyptian and have followed up a whopping £170m offer with a deal that will reach £215m with add ons.
"The Saudis are determined to get their man and have been encouraged by some members of the Kop hierarchy who are torn on whether to sell him or not.
"If this bid fails, they will concentrate on launching a fresh one when the transfer window reopens at the start of next year.
"Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has continually insisted Salah is not for sale but the forward’s entourage are keen to listen to offers."

Van de Beek could yet leave Man Utd

Galatasaray are still in talks with Manchester United for Donny van de Beek and could yet sign the midfielder, The Sun reports. After failing to agree terms on a £1m loan deal on deadline day last week, there is still time for the Turkish side to negotiate with United, who are eager to trim their squad under Ten Hag’s watch.
The Sun adds: “Turkey's transfer window does not close until September 15 with clubs able to continue making offers past the European deadline.
“Van de Beek arrived at the Red Devils in 2020 from Ajax for £40million with high expectations.”

Sancho set for clear-the-air Ten Hag talks

Jadon Sancho will hold clear-the-air talks with Erik ten Hag after being left out of Manchester United’s squad for the defeat at Arsenal on Sunday, the Daily Mail reports. Sancho said he had been made a “scapegoat” after Ten Hag claimed the winger had not been doing well enough in training to warrant a place in their match-day squad.
The Mail added: “Some close to the 23-year-old believe he hasn't been getting a fair run at cementing a first team place, pointing out that Antony is sometimes given preferential treatment despite struggling for consistency himself.
“United insiders dismiss this theory though with a belief the Dutch boss feels Sancho can still give more.”
