Anthony Martial may have scored yet again for Manchester United in their League Cup game against Ipswich but it was the performance of young Brazilian Andreas Pereira that was the talk of Old Trafford.

Pereira, making his first start, capped a fine overall performance with a fine, dipping free-kick from distance.
So, who is Andreas Pereira?

FAVOURED POSITION

Pereira is a modern attacking midfielder capable of operating wide but is said to prefer the number 10 role. He has an eye for a pass and has been known to score the odd spectacular goal, as evidenced by his free-kick against Ipswich.
“I came here as an attacking midfielder - I'm often a no.10 but can play the no.8 role as well. I work every day on set pieces. I've scored a few free-kicks so doing that can pay off,” the man himself told the United website.

BACKGROUND

Andreas Hugo Hoelgebaum Pereira was born in Duffel, Belgium while his professional footballer father Marcos Pereira plied his trade for KFC Zwarte Leeuw in the Belgian league. Andreas' talent was soon clear and he was signed up to one of his father’s former clubs Lommel United.
His talent then took him to PSV Eindhoven in 2005 and United snapped him up in 2011 after he had excelled at the Manchester United Premier Cup.
In 2013 he was named the Player of the Tournament at the prestigious Milk Cup as United won the Premier Section, and last season he was named Manchester United's under-21 player of the year.

SO HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN HIGHLY RATED?

Absolutely, and has been earmarked as a player who can break into the United first team for quite some time.
However, curiously United allowed themselves into a Paul Pogba-esque situation with the Brazil youth international last season.
The 19-year-old was out of contract at the end of the season and a raft of elite European clubs led by PSG were all monitoring the situation closely.
Thankfully for United the player signed a new deal in May, which ties him to the club until June 2018.

WHAT THE PROS SAY

Louis van Gaal
“You have seen he can play right wing, left wing or number 10. He can play all those positions but his competitors are Ashley Young, Memphis Depay, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Wayne Rooney and Jesse Lingard.”
Mauroanne Fellaini
“Andreas is a big talent.I think the club did everything to sign him up to a contract because a lot of teams wanted him. He has to continue like that, to work hard and to keep going and try to win his place.”
Adnan Januzaj
“Andreas is a very good player, he has a lot of good qualities and he can be a great player for United.”
Juan Mata
“I didn't know how good the academy is here. Adnan Januzaj and Andreas Pereira are young players for Manchester United that are going to be very important players for many years.”
