PLAY OF THE DAY
An instinctive, incisive toe-poke finish from England's Fran Kirby, scoring her first World Cup goal on her first World Cup start, and picking up her first World Cup Player of the Match award. Kirby, 21, gave up football as a teenager after the sudden death of her mother, but returned to play for WSL2's Reading, becoming their first full-time professional last year.
MATCHDAY IN SUMMARY
France 0 Colombia 2: Possibly the upset of the tournament. Lady Andrade shocked Les Bleues with her composure, slotting home against the run of play to give Colombia a first-half lead. France should have had a penalty after a deliberate handball, but equally they shouldn't have given Catalina Usme the chance to nip in and double the margin of victory during the dying seconds as Sarah Bouhaddi fancied a jog and a juggle out of her area.
Brazil 1 Spain 0: Yet another clean sheet for Brazil, more outrageous showboating from Marta, and just a single goal in it, courtesy of Andressa Alves.
England 2 Mexico 1: Mark Sampson abandoned the defensive game plan that he adopted against France on Tuesday, bringing in Jade Moore, Toni Duggan and Fran Kirby to the starting XI in an attempt to bring some firepower to his side. The conditions had a bit of a change as well – blazing Moncton sunshine rather than blustery drizzle. Yet it was a pair of second-half substitutions, Alex Greenwood replacing Claire Rafferty and Karen Carney replacing Jill Scott, that lifted England to victory. Kirby got the first with a tidy finish, in off the post, and shortly afterwards Greenwood's cross was nodded in beautifully at the far post by her fellow sub. Karen Bardsley spilled a shot in injury time, allowing Fabiola Ibarra to get a consolation – which may prove crucial should Group F come down to goal difference.
Korea Republic 2 Costa Rica 2: Costa Rica moved to second in Group E with this point, grabbed at the death by Karla Villalobos's smartly-taken equaliser.
TALKING POINT
Refereeing is always a talking point at international tournaments, but some of the officials at this World Cup have made some rather strange calls so far. Thalia Mitsi's failure to punish the rather physical approach of France against England (witness the impact Camille Abily's arm had on Laura Bassett's cheekbone) is one thing; missing a fairly blatant handball, from Colombia's Daniela Montoya, is perhaps forgivable for Liang Qin; but blowing up three minutes before time with no apparent reason, as did Stephanie Frappart in Australia v Nigeria, is another entirely.
TWEET OF THE DAY
COMING UP
Sunday is a rest day as the squads travel for their final group games – England are off to Montreal where they'll face Colombia on Wednesday. Monday's games include what could be an intriguing clash between hosts Canada and tournament newbies Netherlands. Elsewhere, Germany will look to regroup after their draw against Norway by putting a few goals past Thailand.
