England edge Nigeria on penalties after Lauren James sees red for stamp at Women's World Cup

Lauren James was bailed out by her team-mates as 10-woman England survived a huge scare to beat Nigeria on penalties and reach the Women's World Cup quarter-finals. The Lionesses were forced to navigate extra-time a player down after James saw red for a needless stamp at the end of the second half. Nigeria blazed their first two penalties wide of the goal as England won the shootout 4-2.
Earps 'so chuffed' as England beat Nigeria on penalties at World Cup
England scraped past Nigeria on penalties to reach the Women's World Cup quarter-finals after having Lauren James sent off.
The Lionesses had a penalty decision overturned in the first half and were reduced to 10 players when James was sent off for a stamp on Michelle Alozie in the 87th minute in a drama-fuelled last-16 tie.
Nigeria were the better side throughout and were unlucky not to go ahead when they saw two efforts hit the crossbar.
Chloe Kelly scored the decisive penalty to seal a 4-2 penalty shootout win.
England started the first half the brightest but Nigeria soon grew into the game and played the better football.
Defender Ashleigh Plumptre gave the Lionesses a scare when she rattled the crossbar with a sweet strike from the edge of the box and then forced a good save out of Mary Earps on the rebound.
Rachel Daly tumbled to the floor inside the penalty area after a soft touch from Rasheedat Ajibade which led to referee Melissa Borjas abruptly pointing to the spot, but after a lengthy VAR check, the decision was overturned.
And then moments later, Nigeria should have been ahead. Ajibade found space just outside the six-yard box but her first-time effort was blocked by Millie Bright.
Christy Ucheibe was quickest to respond to the rebound, but her strike was brilliantly denied by a last-ditch Jessica Carter block.
Nigeria started the second half as they ended the first - on top - and hit the bar again in another warning for England.
Both teams had chances in the second half, but the score remained goalless thanks to some excellent goalkeeping, especially from Nigeria shot-stopper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Her best effort denied Rachel Daly’s powerful header from inside the six-yard box, showcasing her rapid reflexes to get low and stop the ball from crossing the line.
Then came a moment of madness from James as she stamped on Alozie following a challenge which saw the pair fall to the floor.
She was initially given a yellow card but Borjas was urged to check the pitchside monitor by VAR and subsequently upgraded the card to red.
Chances for either side were few and far between as the match entered extra-time, with both teams holding firm and avoiding any mistakes in the later stages.
The match had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out, but the wait for a goal went on as Georgia Stanway and Desire Oparanozie both missed the goal with penalties to the left.
Bethany England got the Lionesses off the mark when she stroked the ball into the top corner, and England were given a further boost when Alozie sent her effort over the bar.
Daly slammed her penalty home to seize control of the tie, but goals from Ajibade, Alex Greenwood and Ucheibe kept the contest alive.
That was until Kelly stepped up to the occasion once more, just as she did in the European Championship final last season, to deliver the decisive blow with the best spot-kick of the game.
Her fierce strike was unstoppable for Nnadozie as it nestled into the top corner and confirmed England’s spot in the last eight of the tournament, where they face Colombia or Jamaica next Saturday.
TALKING POINT - ENGLAND ESCAPE MAJOR UPSET
Nigeria were without a doubt the better team on the day and looked as though they would be the first African team to win a knockout game at a Women's World Cup, but tournament football can be cruel and Sarina Wiegman’s side did what they had to do to squeeze into the quarter-finals.
They weren’t helped by James’ crazy decision to stamp on Alozie following a tussle between the pair, but the Chelsea forward will learn from it and pending a FIFA review, may have the chance to redeem herself later in the tournament. She will either be suspended for one game or three games.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - CHIAMAKA NNADOZIE (NIGERIA)
What a performance from Nigeria’s goalkeeper. Not only was she brilliant against England, but she has been superb all tournament. The 22-year-old made some vital stops to keep her country in the game as they continued to knock on the door down the other end.
Her best save of the lot came when she denied Daly from point-blank range, showcasing her brilliant reflexes to get low in rapid time and not only save the ball, but stop it from falling into the path of another white shirt. A performance to be proud of.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
17’ - PLUMPTRE RATTLES THE BAR! What a strike that would have been! Kanu twists and turns on the right to get the better of Greenwood and finds Plumptre on the edge of the box, who fires in a sweet strike first-time which hits the bar. After a bit of a scrap for the ball in the penalty area, Plumptre produces another dangerous shot which Earps beats away. A sigh of relief for England!
23’ - RUSSO DENIED! The ball falls to the Arsenal striker on the edge of the box after a slight mix-up at the back from Nigeria, but Nnadozie does well to beat her low shot away.
28’ - DALY FORCES ANOTHER SAVE FROM NNADOZIE! The ball from the corner drops to Rachel Daly completely unmarked in the box and she sends a well-hit half volley into the palms of Nnadozie.
32’ - ENGLAND HAVE A PENALTY! Greenwood sends in a free-kick and as Daly runs to meet the ball, she tumbles in the box after a nudge in the back from Ajbade. There will be a VAR check.
35’ - NO PENALTY! After a lengthy VAR check, the referee had one last look on the pitchside monitor before overturning her original decision - no penalty.
36’ - WHAT A CHANCE FOR NIGERIA! Ajibade finds herself in a great position inside the box and gets a shot off from close range but it's blocked by Bright. Christy Ucheibe gets on the end of the rebound and is surely going to put Nigeria ahead, but Carter makes a brilliant goal-saving tackle to deny her! That's the best chance of the game so far.
46’ - NIGERIA HIT THE BAR AGAIN! Ajibade sends a cross towards the back post which is met by Kanu, who sends a looping header over Earps' head and off the crossbar. Another let-off for England!
75’ - HUGE CHANCE FOR ENGLAND! Daly sends a bullet header towards goal from a corner but Nnadozie shows excellent reflexes to get low and deny her! It looked as though that would be the breakthrough. What a save!
85’ - JAMES CAUTIONED - And she's very lucky only to get a yellow. She stamps on Alozie as the pair go down after a challenge.
87’ - JAMES IS SENT OFF - ENGLAND ARE DOWN TO 10! As expected, the yellow card has been cancelled and instead, James is given a straight red. England's job just got much, much tougher.
93’ - NIGERIA PENALTY SHOUT! Bronze goes straight through the back of Alozie in the penalty box, but the referee isn't interested. It was clumsy from Bronze but she got away with it.
