Ireland defender Seamus Coleman has suffered a double leg fracture and will undergo surgery in Dublin on Saturday, according to a report from Sky Sports News.
Coleman suffered the serious injury following a challenge from Wales left-back Neil Taylor in the 0-0 draw at the Aviva Stadium.
Television broadcasters decided against showing replays of the moment when the Everton right-back was caught by Taylor and his leg snapped.
Sky Sports News says Coleman, 28, will undergo surgery on a double fracture to his right leg in Dublin on Saturday. He is expected to be sidelined for an extensive period.
Taylor was shown a red card.
What the managers said
Ireland boss Martin O'Neill said after the match:
He's a fantastic player and character. It's a major blow for the lad, his club and us. Apparently it wasn't the best challenge in the world.I haven't seen it. He's gone to hospital. I saw his reaction immediately and it didn't look good. He was holding his leg up and it didn't look good. At the end of it all, the most important thing is Seamus' health.
Wales counterpart Chris Coleman defended his player's part in the incident:
First and foremost, the most important thing is Seamus Coleman. We are told that it is not so good, which we are sorry for. Neil Taylor is not really that type of player, but it's a tough one for Seamus. Our thoughts are with him. I have not seen it again. Neil is in the dressing room, he's despondent. If he's got it wrong...he's had a serious injury himself. I have my fingers crossed for Seamus Coleman, he is the most important thing tonight.
