Zdravko Mamic, the most powerful man in Croatian football, has been handed a jail term for corruption while Luka Modric has been charged with perjury.
Mamic was handed a six-and-a-half year sentence after being found guilty of siphoning off an estimated £2 million pounds in transfer fees during his time as an executive at Dinamo Zagreb.
Two other former senior Dinamo officials and a tax official were also jailed for corruption.
All had denied any wrongdoing and have a right to appeal to a higher court.
Prior to the verdict being announced, Mamic fled Croatia for neighbouring Bosnia, where he holds a dual Croatian-Bosnian passport. He cannot be extradited but can serve a jail sentence in Bosnia upon Croatian request if the higher court confirms the sentence.
Also caught up in the trial is Croatia captain and former Dinamo player Luka Modric, who was charged with perjury.
It is believed the Real Madrid midfielder, who will still be able to lead Croatia at this summer's World Cup, is suspected of having made false statements during the trial when asked about his transfer to Tottenham in 2008.
