31-year-old former Chelsea midfielder Mikel - now playing his football in China - captained his country against Argentina, a match they lost 2-1 to crash out of the World Cup at the group stage a week ago.
Mikel was warned to keep quiet about the kidnapping by bandits who pretended to be police when snatching father Pa Michael Obi before demanding a ransom of $28,000.
Police rescued his father on Monday evening amid claims there was gunfire exchanged between the Police and the kidnappers.
Reports claim Mikel's father was tortured and needed stitches. The former Chelsea midfielder may fly his father abroad for treatment.
“I was told they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody," said Mikel.
And I did not want to discuss it with the coach because I did not want my issue to become a distraction to the coach or the rest of the team on the day of such an important game.
"I was emotionally distraught but had to make a decision about whether I was mentally ready to play the game.
“I was confused. I did not know what to do, but in the end I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down.
“I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first.”
Mikel's dad was also kidnapped in 2011 when was he beaten up by bandits.
"Thankfully he is now safely released," said Mikel.
“I thank the police authorities for their rescue efforts and support from friends and family.”
