That was a stunning match. Spain spent much of the game on top, but Ronaldo had an answer for everything that they produced. It had everything - great goals, great play, great drama. We picked this game as the game of the group stages and boy, it lived up to that billing. Wonderful.

- End of 2nd Half
FULL TIME: Portugal 3-3 Spain
Looking at that goal from Ronaldo again... what a sensational finish. He found the top corner of the net. That's got to be one of his best ever freekicks, and there have been a few.
QUERESMA CHANCE! That looked like the chance to win it for Portugal. The winger cut inside, beat one and then two, but his shot is blocked by a combination of about three Spain defenders.
Spain will be wondering how they aren't winning this game. They have been on top for much of the second half, but they have been made to pay for not creating enough chances.
FOUR minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the match. Enough time for a winner?
Can you believe that? Cristiano Ronaldo. Wow. What a performance. Portugal have been nowhere in this second half, but their captain and top scorer has saved them here.
- GoalCristiano RonaldoPortugal
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Portugal 3 (87 mins - Cristiano Ronaldo) Spain 3. CRISTIANOOOO RONALDOOOO! The Portuguese number seven has netted his third of the game and he might just have saved his team a point! What a freekick. He curled it up and over the wall and into the top corner of the net!
- OffDavid SilvaSpain
- OnLucas VázquezSpain
Off comes Silva to be replaced by Vazquez, who wil stretch the pitch in the final few minutes. Is that what's needed?
Portugal have been lacking in this second half. They played the opening 45 minutes with so much verve and energy, but that has been sapped by the passing play of the opposition.
Aspas will be hoping to make an impact in these final few minutes. He was in contention to start this match. His form this season for both club and country has been very impressive.
This is pure Spain now. Portugal are struggling to close them down as they keep the ball... pass, pass, pass. Time is running out for Portugal to mount some late pressure.
- OffGonçalo GuedesPortugal
- OnAndré SilvaPortugal
On comes Silva. His scoring record in qualification for Portugal was fantastic - nine goals in 10 games.
RONALDO WAS IN BEHIND! Just for a second it looked like Ronaldo was going to beat De Gea and the Spanish defence to a long ball over the top, but Pique makes the last gasp clearance.
Portugal need more thrust in the final third for the last 10 minutes of the match and it looks like they are going to turn to Silva to provide that off the bench. He's coming on soon.
- OffDiego CostaSpain
- OnIago AspasSpain
Another change for Spain and it's Costa who comes off to be replaced by Aspas.
QUERESMA, AUDACIOUS! The Portuguese winger collects a throw in, turns and sends a shot with the outside of the right boot towards the goal. But his effort flashes over the bar.
If Spain can keep this lead, this will be a big boost to them. It's been the week from hell for the 2010 World Cup winners, but this would show that they are still challengers this summer.
This is becoming tougher and tougher for Portugal now. Spain are very comfortable on the ball, as we all know, and they are pinging the passes around, making the opposition chase it.
SCUFFED SHOT FROM COSTA! The Atletico Madrid forward should have done better with that. The cross from Alba at the byline was a good one, but Costa scuffed his effort across the face of goal.
- OffAndrés IniestaSpain
And a change for Spain as well, and it's the expected one. Iniesta comes off and fans around the stadium are up to applaud the legend.
- OffBernardo SilvaPortugal
- OnRicardo QuaresmaPortugal
Another change for Portugal. Bernardo (who was actually rather quiet) off, Queresma on.
Guedes has so much talent, but he's not a centre forward. Portugal have played well an Santos has got his tactics spot on, with that one exception. It's a waste of a great young player.
- OffBruno FernandesPortugal
- OnJoão MárioPortugal
A change for Portugal and it's Mario who comes on for Fernandes.
Iniesta is still on the pitch for Spain. Surely he won't play the full 90 minutes? He hasn't been as effective in this second half and Hierro has options from the bench. Thiago?
All of a sudden, this looks like a different match. Spain are well on top and are playing with confidence. This game has taken some twists and turns, but is there a way back for Portugal?
Portugal need some legs from the bench, and right on cue it looks like Mario might be about to come on. He's getting stripped and ready down on the touchline. Change to be made soon.
That was a half chance for Portugal. Guedes got his head on a deep corner kick, giving Fonte the chance to bring down the ball inside the box. But it just got stuck under his feet.
There's bit more intensity in Portugal's play now. They now have to chase the game and that might be rather difficult against a Spain team that likes to keep the ball, toy with opponents.
It's hard to understate the brilliance of that last goal from Nacho. He struck it so cleanly. Patricio simply didn't stand a chance in the Portuguese goal as it rebounded off both posts.
There were some fears that this game would be a cautious affair. That both teams would play it safe and easy as they prepare for easier games later in the group. Not a bit of it.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Portugal 2 Spain 3 (58 mins - Nacho Fernandez). WHAT. A. GAME! A botched Portuguese clearance inside the box falls nicely to Nacho about 20 yards out and the Spain defender strikes the ball cleanly on the half volley, finding the back of the net off the inside of both posts.
You'd expect that Spain will now be on top, but then we thought that after the first Spanish goal and thn Portugal went ahead again. La Roja are controlling things now.
The second half had started at a slower pace, with a lower itensity, than the first half, but Spain have taken their chance. Good freekick from Silva, there. Nice idea from the playmaker.
- GoalDiego CostaSpain
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Portugal 2 Spain 2 (55 mins - Diego Costa). It's another equaliser and it's Costa again! Silva clipped a clever freekick to the back post, where Busquets beat Guedes to the header and knocked it down for Costa, who bundled home a finish from a matter of yards out.
How long will Iniesta last? The Barcelona playmaker is now into the twilight of his career and only tends to play around 60 minutes at club level. Will we see replaced by Thiago soon?
Spain have controlled the ball since the restart, but you have to admire the worth ethic of this Portuguese team. They are very well drilled and are very good at plugging the gaps at the back.
The signs in the early part of this second half is that Portugal have decided to put Carvalho on Iniesta in an attempt to keep the Spanish playmaker under wraps. He has played well.
De Gea will be hoping to make a save early on in this second half. He has made a few mistakes for Spain in recent times, but none as big as the one he made before the break.
Santos will be pleased with how his Portugal side played in the first half. They started well, then sat back and absorbed the Spanish pressure, then finished the half well as well.
How long will Hierro wait before making a change to his Spain team? As well as his side have played in the midfield, they could do with more of a cutting edge in the final third.
No changes for either side at the half time interval and let's hope there is no change in the entertainment this match has served up so far. The first half was a wonderful spectacle.
- 2nd Half
The second half is under way! Portugal are 2-1 up against Spain in Sochi.
What did you make of the first half in Sochi? Is there any way for Spain to stop Ronaldo, who looks on the top of his game? Have Spain been a little unlucky in the opening 45 minutes? Tweet me!
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Portugal 2-1 Spain. The referee blows up a minute early for some reason and Portugal take a 2-1 lead into the break. What a magnificent half of football that was. Wow.
Two minutes of stoppage time to be played at the end of the first half.
- GoalCristiano RonaldoPortugal
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Portugal 2 (44 mins - Cristiano Ronaldo) Spain 1. Ronaldo has a second goal, but what a blunder by De Gea! WOW! You don't see that very often. Ronaldo got the shot away from just inside the box and the Spain goalkeeper allows the effort to slip through his fingers.
Once again, Portugal fail to make the most of the chance on the counter attack. Why would they turn back? In the end, the cross is played in by Cedric and Pique beats Ronaldo to the header.
ISCO SHOT! Good play from Spain presents Isco with the chance to get a shot away on goal from the edge of the box. He wraps his right foot around it, but Patricio makes the save.
These past few minutes have been a bit more conservative from the two teams. Spain have slowed things down, with Portugal quite happy to stand off allow them to have the ball.
Spain have the chance from a corner kick, with Busquets getting on the end of the delivery into the box. But he couldn't quite make the right connection and the ball balloons over.
Iniesta is making his mark on this game. The Barcelona playmaker is pulling the strings on the edge of the Portuguese penalty area. The Spanish rotation in midfield is great to watch.
Ronaldo isn't happy with his teammates at the moment. He wants them to provide him with better service on the counter, and he has a point. Portugal have reverted to long balls in the last 10 minutes or so.
INCHES WIDE! Almost a second goal for Spain. Wonderful build up play got Alba to the byline, he cuts it back for Iniesta and his left footed shot flashes just past the far post by inches.
We were right to bill this as the game of the group stages. This has been an excellent opening half hour of football. This is two very good teams going at each other. Fantastic.
The Portuguese players aren't happy. Bernardo won a throw in and took it quickly, releasing Ronaldo in behind. But the referee pulls it back... not sure why. He's overturned it! What?
This is a very important spell for Portugal. They had the better of the opening 20 minutes, at least the better of the chances, but now Spain are on top and they need to regroup.
Boy oh boy, this is some game. We expected this match to be a good one, but this is exceeding expectations so far. Both teams have created chances. Both teams are playing well.
SILVA INTO THE WALL! It was the Manchester City playmaker who lined up the freekick about 20 yards out from goal, but he smashes it into the Portuguese wall. Should have done better.
- Yellow cardBruno FernandesPortugal
That looked harsh to me. Fernandes is shown a yellow for a foul on Nacho that didn't even look like a foul.
Spain are in control of things at the moment. They have used that goal as a springboard. It's almost as if they are using the frustration of the past few days to push them forward here.
CONFUSION! Isco thinks that the ball has crossed the line, with his strike smashing off the bar and down on to the ground. Replays suggest it wasn't over, but the Spanish players want to go to VAR.
That was Costa at his best. He did it all on his own. Spain actually played a long ball up to him, which is unlike them, but Costa made the most of it. That's what he used to do for Chelsea.
- GoalDiego CostaSpain
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Portugal 1 Spain 1 (24 mins - Diego Costa). Spain equaliser! Costa has scored all by himself! He won the ball in a header, then beat Fonte as he surged towards goal and found the bottom corner of the Portuguese net with a laser finish. What a strike! We're level.
GUEDES SHOULD SCORE! That should be a second goal for Portugal. They had three players on the counter attack, Ronaldo set up Guedes with a clever pass, but he takes too long to shoot and the tackle is made.
There is a sense that Spain are starting to find their flow after a very difficult start to the match. They'll still be using the methods and tactics that Lopetegui put in place before he left.
INTO THE WALL! Ronaldo lines up the freekick from the edge of the box on the right hand side. He smashes his effort into the top of the Spain wall. A freekick is given for barging into the wall by Portuguese players.
- Yellow cardSergio BusquetsSpain
First yellow card of the match. No surprises as to who it has been shown to. Busquets enters the book for a late tackle on Guedes.
BREAKAWAY! That was a half chance for Portugal on the rapi counter. It all came from Ronaldo's excellent flick around the corner, which set Guedes free. But he dithered and made the wrong choice, shooting from distance.
This Portugal team are very well coached by Santos. They are comfortable in sitting back and inviting pressure on top of themselves, but their movement when they have the ball is great.
Spain are awash with world class midfielders, but the problem they faced in some of their warm up games was that there was no variety. Easy to defend against sometimes.
There is an excitement around the stadium in Sochi whenever Isco gets on the ball. He's the guy who looks like he could make something happen for Spain when they have possession.
That last chance was an illustration of how Spain can use Costa. He hasn't always been at his best for his national team, but Spain can use him to play off, bringing others into the game.
For the first time in the match Spain are now taking control of the ball. We will see more of this from them over the course of the night. Portugal are quite happy to sit deep and absorb.
SILVA OVER THE BAR! That was a chance for the Manchester City playmaker, Spain's first real opportunity of the game. Costa knocked it down for Silva, but he shoots over the target.
There are some somber looks on the faces of the Spain team, including Hierro on the bench and the Spanish football federation chief in the stands. This doesn't look good for them.
So Spain's nightmare week has just got a whole lot worse. How will they respond to going behind so early on in the match? Can they bounce back? That's quite the blow to take.
You just had the feeling that Ronaldo would have his say in this game. Portugal have started the better of the two teams and they made that count in the early minutes of the game.
- Goal by penaltyCristiano RonaldoPortugal
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Portugal 1 (4 mins - Cristiano Ronldo) Spain 0. It's taken a grand total of four minutes for Ronaldo to make his mark in this game! He won the penalty kick and he converts from 12 yards out, sending De Gea the wrong way, placing a powerful spot kick straight down the middle.
PENALTY KICK TO PORTUGAL! The referee points to the spot as Ronaldo goes down inside the box. The tackle was made by Nacho and it looked to be a foul.
We have all been looking forward to this one for a while. This was picked out as the game of the group stages as soon as the draw was made. Sit back and enjoy this one.
- 1st Half
The match is under way in Sochi! It's Portugal against Spain in Group B of the 2018 World Cup.
This match-up disappointed at the last World Cup. However, surely we will see some goals, some entertainment, tonight. Portugal and Spain have so much quality between them.
Until the drama around Lopetegui drama this week, the biggest problem Spain had was over who to play up front. Costa has got the nod over Aspas and Rodrigo. His international scoring record isn't great.
All eyes will be on Ronaldo as he faces many of his Real Madrid teammates on the Spanish side. The Portuguese forward actually only has three goals in his last three World Cups.
Porutgal come into this World Cup as the reigning European champions, although not many expect them to compete for this tournament. Might they might a run into the latter rounds, though?
Of course, it's impossible to talk about this match without mentioning the mayhem that has taken hold of the Spain camp in the last few days. Hierro will take charge of the team following Lopetegui's sacking.
So the big team news for Spain is that Carvajal has missed out through injury and so Nacho starts at right back. In midfield, Koke is favoured over Thiago. And Costa starts up front.
