Cannavaro won the European award last week after leading Italy to World Cup glory, an award that led to criticism from French coaches Arsene Wenger and Gerard Houllier.
"It shows that the people who vote only look at the World Cup which, when you speak about elite football, in my opinion is the lowest level," Wenger said.
The duo were questioning why Thierry Henry missed out on being shortlisted despite his goalscoring record for Arsenal.
Zidane is nominated despite his final moment in football being a head-butt on Marco Materazzi in injury time of the World Cup final and not having won any silverware in the 2005/6 season.
Ronaldinho did not impress in what was a poor tournament for Brazil yet won the Spanish Primera Liga and UEFA Champions League with Barcelona.
The final decision will be made on Monday December 18th in Zurich.
