McLaren look to take the battle to Red Bull in the opening practice session for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

No change as the times are confirmed... Rosberg quickest, followed by Alonso, Schumacher, Button and Hamilton in that order.

The chequered flag is up and Hamilton is mid-lap, a touch faster here from the last one and he may improve further... He was on pole last year, if you remember, with a time half a second quicker than Rosberg has gone today.

Button improves his same by a fraction, but still a second off the warmed-up Rosberg. Fourth or fifth I think. Fourth. Hamilton crosses in a time a tenth slower, he's fifth.

Trulli has some trouble at the chicane... Rosberg emerges from the car in a lot of discomfort, hot and sweaty. Possibly hot air flowing into the cockpit. Deary me. Mercedes's cooling problems continue.

Rosberg pits saying on the radio that his body feels a burning sensation. Weird.

Hamilton is back out on a set of new soft tyres as Button fizzes around...

After a break Rosberg has extended his lead to 1:15.591.

Di Resta has recovered from that spin earlier and moves up to fifth, 1:17.294.

Good next lap from the Bulgarian though as he moves up six places to 10th.

Petrov around four or five seconds off the pace... five and half in the end, in 24th.

Rosberg's next lap moves him atop the pile, 1:16.002.

Some great splits from Rosberg here, six hundredths off coming into the last corner... and he moves to second, a tenth off Alonso.

Trilli in the pits now as Rosberg shows some good speed starting out his next lap...

Perez coming round well off the pace, seven or eight seconds or so...

Alonso still leading the timesheets at 1:16.139, Massa and Button following with Rosberg in fourth.

Hamilton does a PB for the first sector, just over 40s... He becomes straight through the final chicane, the eighth driver to do so.

Heidfeld also having problems at Morris, spinning out and returning without too much disaster.

Paul di Resta takes a massive slide at the final chicane, Trulli just about avoiding him... Di Resta is back on track as Button slides about a bit. Lack of grip from the softer tyres...

After a quick delay we can continue. Not too much debris was on the track.
