Rosberg wins in Monaco; Hamilton: 'We're not friends'

It was yet another Mercedes one-two at the Monaco Grand Prix – but Rosberg pipped his team-mate this time round.

After controversy in qualifying, when Hamilton clearly thought Rosberg had obstructed his path to pole position, the pair led the race all the way.

They opened up a sizeable gap between themselves and the rest of the field until 12 laps from the finish, when Hamilton reported that his vision was obscured due to grit in his left eye. Unsurprisingly, he fell further and further behind Rosberg, giving Daniel Ricciardo and his Red Bull a chance to close in on second place.

The power of the Mercedes saw Hamilton through, however, as he managed to maintain a half-a-second advantage over the Australian rookie.

Hamilton’s displeasure at the entire weekend’s events was evident on the podium, with a handshake between the Mercedes pair noticeably absent.

He diplomatically commented in the post-race interviews: "It’s a good day for the team, to get a one-two.”

However, Hamilton later told Sky Sports that his relationship with Rosberg is strictly professional.

Rather embarrassingly for Rosberg, he contradicted that stance in a separate interview.

Still, he had a better experience of Monte Carlo than a significant proportion of the starters, with two spells under the auspices of the safety car. Retirees included Sebastian Vettel, suffering a power failure in his Red Bull, and Pastor Maldonado, whose disastrous season continued when he did not even get off the grid.

Perhaps the happiest team will be Marussia, who picked up their first points as Jules Bianchi finished eighth. That result may yet be amended; Bianchi failed to observe a five-second stop-go penalty correctly, and as such could have that time added on, bumping him down to ninth.
