EVANS TRIUMPHS AT INAUGURAL SHANGHAI E-PRIX WITH STRATEGY MASTERCLASS

Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) secured his second win of the season at the inaugural Shanghai E-Prix.

Evans took the lead in the peloton-style race with six laps to go and stretched out the field. Despite Pascal Wehrlein (TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team) briefly taking the position off Evans again, the Kiwi fought back with an excellent move around the outside at Turn 1 on the last lap and there was no stopping him from there.

Behind, Wehrlein ferociously defended second from championship leader Nick Cassidy (Jaguar TCS Racing) who had a one per cent energy advantage on the final lap but could not bring it to effect, having to settle for third in the end.

THANK YOU AND GOODBYE!

That's it for now from Formula E in Shanghai - thanks for your company through today's race. The good news is, we're doing it all again tomorrow. The timing is the same as today with the race starting just after 8am UK time - see you then!

09:12

CASSIDY POST-RACE

"It was a nice race today, awesome to get a 1-3.

"I had the energy to win for sure.

"It wasn't my decision, so it's okay."

09:10

WEHRLEIN POST-RACE

"It was a tough race. In the end, I think we went into the lead a bit too early and for a bit too long. I think that's where Evans and the other could built a bit of an energy advantage. I think in the past we have been a bit too conservative, today maybe a bit too aggressive at when we should take the lead. Then on the last lap, due to defending, my target dropped, I had to coast quite early and Mitch [Evans] overtook me into Turn 1.

"It was a tough fight on the last lap with the Jaguars because Mitch [Evans] clearly tried to slow me down so that Nick [Cassidy] could pass me. But yeah, a few contacts, that's how it is.

"I think it was hard but fair. One time when I was passing Mitch [Evans], he forced me onto the grass - that from my point of view was a bit too far. But anyway, I think we did what we could do, we kept it clean and it's a well-deserved podium for the team."

09:04

EVANS POST-RACE

"I'm super happy. It was not an easy race to manage; starting towards the front can be good, it can be bad, but I think we managed it well. I thought I got into the lead at the right time, but, actually, Pascal [Wehrlein] caught me napping a bit into Turn 8 and he put his nose up and had another go at me. I'm surprised he didn't get anything for that going off-track when passing me, but we'll look into that afterwards.

"Anyway, great result for the team, got it done on the last lap. I had an energy advantage, so I just wanted to bide my time and let the race come to me and it did. So I'm super stoaked to have a 1-3 for Jaguar and great points for our championship - it was a good one!

"It's all fine margins in this category. One-lap pace for everyone is super tight, so qualifying margins are even tighter and then in the race everyone is trying to get to the front at the exact same time and it's not easy to get done. But full credit to the team for guiding me through that and hopefully we can pull off something similar tomorrow."

29/29

EVANS WINS IN SHANGHAI

Evans brings P1 over the line for his second win of the season. Wehrlein defends for his life against Cassidy and holds on to second.

Cassidy had a one per cent energy advantage but could not use it.

29/29

EVANS TAKES THE LEAD

Now Evans makes a move on Wehrlein stick.

28/29

CASSIDY TOLD TO HOLD

Interesting call from Jaguar who instruct Cassidy to hold, despite a two per cent energy advantage over both Wehrlein and Evans.

27/29

WEHRLEIN DEFENDS

Evans attacks, but Wehrlein holds firm for now. Behind, Cassidy is waiting for instructions from his crew on whether to go for the lead.

26/29

WEHRLEIN LEADS, ADVANTAGE JAGUAR

Wehrlein continues to lead from Evans and Cassidy. The Jaguar duo have an energy advantage of one and two per cent respectively,

25/29

FIGHTS!

Cassidy launches an attack on Dennis for third and, after going side-by-side for a bit, make sit stick.

Ahead, Wehrlein goes for first versus Evans and, despite going over the grass, gains the position.

24/29

ADVANTAGE JAGUAR

As Evans continues to lead, Dennis attacks Wehrlein for second but can't make it stick. All that does is allow Cassidy in fourth to close further in while conserving energy.

23/29

EVANS ATTACKS

Evans attacks Wehrlein for the lead, makes it stick, and is looking keen to defend the position from here.

22/29

ATTACK MODE DENNIS

Dennis now deploys his second attack mode and drops only one position into fifth.

21/29

ENERGY ADVANTAGE CASSIDY

Indeed, the Porsches are falling behind on energy. Evans and Cassidy have the advantage which could prove crucial later on in the race.

20/29

WEHRLEIN CONTINUES TO LEAD

Interestingly, Wehrlein has chosen to lead for a good time now which is not the most efficient option to take.

19/29

EVANS VERSUS PORSCHE

The Porsche duo has established itself at the head of the race, but Evans is looking for an attack on Da Costa for second and makes it work.

18/29

STRATEGY DENNIS

Dennis is now the only driver to not have deployed his second attack mode yet.

17/29

"GO" MOMENT WITH SEVEN LAPS TO GO

The virtual race engineer tells us that the "go" moment in this race, i.e. the ideal time to try make a break, is with seven laps to go.

16/29

PELOTON STILL

More than halfway through the race and things are still very close. Again, the order keeps changing, but, position-wise, Wehrlein is doing a great job of consistently being at the sharp end.

15/29

CASSIDY ON THE MOVE

After a difficult first half of the race, Cassidy looks to have found an extra gear now. Having been stuck in the field, the championship leader has used up some energy to make his way up the order into sixth.

13/29

TROUBLE FOR CASSIDY

Championship leader Cassidy may have missed the sweet spot for attack mode earlier on and is now stuck in the field around 10th place. He has his work cut out for him to get to the front here.

12/29

CHANGES AT THE FRONT

De Vries' crew chief informs him they don't want to lead (to conserve energy) and he hands the honours back to Wehrlein.

11/29

DE VRIES TAKES THE LEAD

New leader again as De Vries takes over at the front. As expected, the order - and indeed the lead - keeps changing here but the one driver consistently in the top 3 is Wehrlein.

10/29

ENERGY ADVANTAGE DENNIS

Dennis is informed by his crew that he currently holds a one per cent energy advantage over everyone except Evans.

9/29

VERGNE REGAINS THE LEAD

Pole sitter Vergne is now back in the lead, having dropped down the order a bit previously.

8/29

EVANS TAKES THE LEAD

We have a new leader as Evans takes over at the front.

7/29

ATTACK MODE ACOSTA

Porsche do it again with Da Costa now deploying his second attack mode and both he and Wehrlein remain in first and second. This is working out nicely for the German manufacturer so far.

6/29

WELL PLAYED BY PORSCHE

Da Costa has worked his way to the sharp end of things and gives his teammate Wehrlein a bit of a buffer to allow him to deploy his second attack mode and still hold on to the lead.

5/29

PELOTON

Shanghai is delivering the close, peloton-style race we were hoping for and the order keeps chopping and changing. However, Wehrlein is currently doing well to hang on to the sharp end of the field.

4/29

FRIJNS STRATEGY

Interesting from Frijns who works his way up into the lead and heads straight into attack mode, falling into fourth. His crew is delighted, so their strategy looks spot-on so far.

3/29

FIRST ATTACK MODES

There's a couple of attack modes being deployed, most prominently by Wehrlein who rejoins the field in second.

2/29

SIDE-BY-SIDE RACING

As expected, we have multiple cars abreast on the wide, flowing circuit and the order keeps changing. Wehrlein has taken over from Vergne in the lead for the time being.

1/29

VERGNE DEFENDS LEAD FROM POLE

It looked like a slow start from Vergne, but he manages to defend the lead from Wehrlei into Turn 1. Meanwhile, Rowland drops behind Evans into fourth.

08:02

WEATHER REPORT

It's looking a bit overcast in Shanghai, but the chances of rain are low. We have very high air temperatures though.

DI GRASSI EXCITED TO RETURN TO CHINA

Formula E began in China a decade ago when the Beijing E-Prix marked the series' inaugural race. Back then it was Lucas di Grassi who came out on top - the Brazilian is relishing a return to China, albeit to a different track:

“I am really looking forward to returning to China. I clinched my first Formula E victory there ten years ago in the championship’s debut. For me, the Beijing street circuit is still one of the best tracks we’ve ever had.

“Now we come to the permanent Shanghai circuit, where I have already raced in Formula 1 and the WEC. It’s a very challenging and technical track, especially with the Formula E car. The fans can look forward to the next crazy races where we will also see several hundred overtakes!”

HELLO AND WELCOME

Good morning and welcome to our live text coverage of Part 1 of a Shanghai double-header. Formula E is back in China after a four year absence and for the first time the paddock will be taking to the popular Shanghai International Circuit. The 3.051km layout is a shortened version of the traditional Grand Prix circuit; due to the wide, flowing track, expect plenty of side-by-side racing and energy management to be even more crucial than usual!
