The BBC reported that Herrera was involved in a motorcycle accident on Saturday in Tampa, Florida.
Speaking on a GoFundMe page, his family said in a statement: "Our family is devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Geane Carlos Herrera, known in the professional fighting world as 'La Pulga', whose life was cut way too short at only 33 years-old.
"Geane leaves behind a 16-year-old son, his three-month pregnant girlfriend, mother, father, sisters, a brother and a family that loves him and will deeply miss him."
He took part in 13 fights in a seven-year career in mixed martial arts, and fought four times in the UFC after making his debut against Roy Borg.
Herrera also took part in the Bare Knuckle Championship (BKFC) in 2021, beating Abdiel Velazquez in his sole win via technical knockout.
Borg paid tribute to Herrera on Instagram and said: "He was a good guy, my prayers are with him and his family during this tough time."
Herrera began his fighting career at the Real Fight Championships in 2011 before moving into UFC.
After defeat in that aforementioned clash against Borg, he claimed a stoppage victory over Joby Sanchez ahead of defeats to Ali Bagautinov and Ben Nguyen respectively.
He competed in one more MMA bout and beat Darren Mima in an Absolute Championship clash.
