It's started to rain, and it looks like the riders are going to call it a day with a couple of minutes remaining.
It looks like Stoner will be on pole for the race tomorrow... unless Simoncelli can do something here... no, he can't. He looked like he was for a moment, but he failed to sustain his speed.
Stoner is still half a second quicker than anyone, with Lorenzo the only one going even close to matching him.
Pedrosa, still sore from his injury, can't better his 14th place with just over five minutes to go.

Barbera crashes out on the gravel! He's hurt himself and takes a while to pick himself up. But eventually he gets up and hobbles away.
Stoner now reclaims pole with a 1:30.281! He's really laid down the marker there!
Lorenzo goes quickest with a 1:30.775 as Capirossi takes a tumble! He goes flying over his handlebars after losing control of his front wheel! He walks very gingerly away from that one!
The skies have suddenly gone dark. There could be rain ahead. It really is amazing how quickly the weather can change here. Across the water on the mainland in Melbourne, they say you can have four seasons in one day.
Here's Rossi, looking to topple Stoner at the top of the timesheets... not this time. The best the Doctor can do is 1:31.627.

Half an hour gone and things look like this: Stoner, Spies, Lorenzo, Rossi, in that order, at a blustery but dry track on Phillip Island.
Stoner hits the top of the charts again with a 1:30.993 as the track dries out completely.
The times are still slow enough to suggest that no one has really had a big push yet as we near the halfway mark.

Ben Spies goes fastest with Stoner in the garage, animatedly describing a wobble he had on his last lap out on the track. Spies has set a time of 1:31.387.

Capirossi is a good five seconds off the pace as he zooms through. He'll have to do a lot better, but there's plenty of time to go in this session yet.
Stoner has set the early pace today - the Aussie rider has put in a time of 1:31.461. Rossi is the closest to matching him so far.
Valentino Rossi was among those who found the conditions rather tricky. He'll be pleased the rain has stayed away today - although that can change in an instant in this part of the world.
And then Casey Stoner used all his local knowledge of the track to top the timesheets in the second practice session earlier today.
Newly crowned world champion Jorge Lorenzo set the pace in that rain-affected first practice session yesterday, showing that he's not likely to ease off this weekend, even though he has the title in the bag.
The bikes are beginning to make their way out onto the track - and the qualifying session is under way!
