Cal Crutchlow's last lap was faster than Casey Stoner's! However, he has almost six seconds to make up on Hayden, so seventh looks like the limit of his achievement today.

In fact, we're looking at a three-way battle for second, with Bautista joining the party just behind Stoner and Pedrosa.

Pedrosa is sizing up the struggling Stoner, his Honda team-mate, and we could soon be looking at a Spanish one-two.

Lorenzo is really surging clear at the front - Stoner's Honda looks like it may be suffering from chatter issues, and this looks like Lorenzo's to lose.

Lorenzo is just about keeping Stoner in check. 0.736 is the gap between first or second, and this is looking a lot like a two-horse race.

Cal Crutchlow is still behind Stefan Bradl, but both have got past Hector Barbera so Cal is into ninth.

Dovizioso tries to make a move on Ben Spies who shuts the door, and Pedrosa comes through past Dovi!

Lorenzo goes second! He takes a non-existent gap and squeezes past Spies - can he now close the gap on Stoner? Let's find out...

Lorenzo is past Bautista into third. No way past Spies yet - and that's good news for Stoner, who is six tenths clear in the lead now.

Crutchlow into the top 10! He is in front of Rossi, and the next man on his hit list is Stefan Bradl.

Hayden opens the door for Jorge Lorenzo, who steams down the inside into fourth place. Hayden seems to be struggling with his brakes just now.

It was a bad mistake from Spies to let Stoner through. He completely missed his braking point and ran very wide. Lucky to hold on to second, actually.

Stoner is back on the exhaust pipe of Spies. You feel the Australian could be biding his time, with 16 full laps laeft to run.

A good lap from Spies, who just opens up a hint of a gap ahead of Stoner. Valentino Rossi is down in 10th, six places behind his Ducati team-mate Nicky Hayden.

Crutchlow into 11th. Lorenzo sets the fastest lap with a 2:02.920, which is pretty quick for this point of the race.

Stoner is having a look down the inside of Spies - and Cal Crutchlow is already up to 13th after starting dead last on the grid.

The field is already splitting in two - nine at the front, 11 at the back.

GOOOOO!!! Ben Spies gets the holeshot from second on the grid, Stoner second and Bautista drops back to third.

This will be a huge test for Cal Crutchlow - his injured left foot is of course his gear-change foot. Give the man a medal.
