The incident happened on lap four of the grand prix, when Rossi closed rapidly on Dani Pedrosa under braking, and had to take to the kerbs at Turn 8 to avoid the Honda.
Rossi then lost control of his Yamaha and had a high-side across the asphalt run-off area, coming to rest just before the tyre wall.
He was stretchered off and taken to the medical centre and later to a local hospital for a CT scan, although the team reported he had not suffered any serious injuries.
Yamaha said Rossi suffered a concussion with a suspected loss of consciousness, but the CT scan ruled out any bleeding in the brain.
He will be under observation in the coming hours, but the team said there are no reasons for concern.
After initial checks at the circuit, he was declared OK by MotoGP medical officials but taken to hospital for the precautionary scan.
Rossi's Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo went on to win the race after both Marc Marquez and Pedrosa crashed their Hondas while trying to stay out on slicks in a late rain shower.
The next race takes place in Japan on October 12.
