Spies's Yamaha gets in between Pedrosa and Dovizioso! That looks like it may end Pedrosa's bid to pinch third in the final standings!

Spies is still stalking behind that pair, waiting for them to cancel each other out so he can nip into second. Stoner still 10 seconds ahead.

Pedrosa is back ahead of Dovizioso now! Neither of these men can afford to blink. You get the feeling these two could race all night and they'd still be switching positions every couple of laps!

The teams are now preparing spare bikes, just in case the rain gets worse, but it seems more a precautionary measure than anything.

Now Spies has entered the fray, could he be an extra rogue element in the Pedrosa v Dovi battle?

Spies makes a move on Pedrosa but he only succeeds in dropping furhter back after being squeezed out at a turn.

Rimma Lydia Cininta says on Twitter: "Watching #MotoGP without Rossi on the lap is like watching Barca without Messi, if you know what I mean.. Thank you so much, Bautista." - The Spanish rider has gone to apologise to the thrree riders he took out on turn one.

Dovi is back in second place! These two are battling away for second place. Pedrosa is right on his team-mate's tail though.

Stoner's lead has extended beyond the 10-second mark. A truly worthy champion.

Pedrosa overtakes Dovizioso! The Honda team-mates switch places, both on the track and in the rider standings! As it stands, they would finish level on points, but Pedrosa has won three races this season and so would take third.

It's becoming a bit of a procession at the front now. For the time being, the best battle is for seventh as Toni Elias buzzes around and behind Capirossi, trying to overtake. Any deviation off the racing line risks slipping off, though.

Nicky Hayden is philosophical about his first-lap crash: "First corner, wet track on slicks... it happens." - Such a disappointing way to finish a season for all four riders.

...while Michele Pirro gave the Gresini Racing team a hugely emotional victory in the Moto2 race, a fortnight after the death of the squad's lead rider Simoncelli.

Quick update on the day's earlier races: Nico Terol became the last ever 125cc world champion in the category's farewell race, which was won by Maverick Vinales...

Stoner's gap at the front is up to 5.858 seconds now. The Australian looks as though he's going to lead frol pole to pdium yet again.

Eurosport reader Dave references the tragic shadow which hangs over this race: "the only number we should be thinking about is the­ number 58.............. respect..." - Loris Capirossi is wearing that number in tribute to Simoncelli today.

The inquest into that early crash is continuing in the paddock. Bautista is protesting his innocence, but the toehrs must be fuming.

Remember, whoever finishes first out of Dovizioso and Pedrosa will finish the seasonn third in the championship, so the battle between those two should be compelling. Currently Dovi is one place ahead in second.

Spies is just a touch late on his brakes and swings well wide, allowing Pedrosa to retake third. All that good work gone to waste for Spies!

Really gutsy pass from Dovizioso as he nips past Pedrosa, and before the Spaniard can respond he eats Spies's dust too! Stoner can enjoy opening up a gap now as those three scrap it out.

The yellow flag is flying on turn one. No overtaking to be done on that corner.

The riders are away! It's a great start for Stoner and Spies but Bautista, Hayden, De Puniet and Rossi goes flying off on the first corner! Bautista lost his grip and took out three bikes on his way off the track! All four men are back on their feet, but it remains to be seen how many get back on their bikes.

The riders are going round on their warm-up lap now. The track is soaking wet, not ideal conditions for the final race of the season. For several riders, in fact, this is their final race in MotoGP.

World champion Casey Stoner equalled Mick Doohan's record of 12 pole positions in a single season as he dominated qualifying for the MotoGP season finale at Valencia. Pedrosa and Ben SPies complete the front of the grid.

Stoner may be the champion, but his name is not the one at the forefront of people's minds. This is the first race since the tragic death of Marco Simoncelli in Malaysia two weeks ago. The Italian's Gresini team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama has said on the grid that he will be riding in tribute to him, while Loris Capirossi is wearing a specially designed helmet in tribute to his late countryman.

Newly-crowned world champion Casey Stoner aims to finish his season on a high by claiming his 10th win of the year. Former champion Jorge Lorenzo is confirmed as finishing second in the standings this season but another Spaniard - Dani Pedrosa - could sneak into third if he can overtake Andrea Dovizioso. The Italian is just four points ahead of him going into this race.
