Eric Frenzel became the first German winner of the Nordic Combined World Cup event in Schonach since 1987 as he triumphed in dramatic fashion.
Duelling with Magnus Krog until the final metres of the cross-country event, it was actually the Norwegian who crossed the finish line first only to be disqualified for obstructing Frenzel heading into the last corner.
It was an eighth victory of the season for Frenzel, who had already secured a fourth consecutive overall World Cup title, and the first home success in Schonach since Hubert Schwarz 29 years ago.
The 37-year-old Norwegian Havard Klemetsen was in the lead following the ski jumping after an effort of 103.5m gave him 128.4 points but he faded in the cross-country to finish 20th.
Japan’s Akito Watabe had sealed second spot heading into the cross-country with a leap of 99m but eventually had to settle for bronze with Norway’s Jan Schmid winning the silver medal on the day.
