The reigning world champions started the 4x 5km relay race six seconds behind Austria, who were first out of the gate after winning the large hill competition by 469.5 points, and eventually claimed the bronze medal.
Vinzenz Geiger chased down Austria's Wilhelm Denifl and then passed duties over to Fabian Riessle, who opened up a commanding 57 second lead after the second leg.
It was then handed over to Eric Frenzel, the five-time world champion who won gold earlier in the individual normal hill, as he coasted his penultimate leg without a challenge from Norway, who were 45 seconds behind.
Frenzel defends Nordic combined gold
Norway, the reigning Olympic champions in this event, were nowhere in sight as Johannes Rydzek, the Olympic champion in Large Hill, carried the German flag over the line in a time of 46:09.80 to complete a sweep of Olympic Nordic titles and their first team gold medal since the 1988 Calgary Games.
