It was a magical day for Peaty, who began by smashing the world record with a time of 57.55 seconds in his 100m breaststroke heat.

The 21-year-old later followed that by recording the second fastest time ever in the event to coast through to Sunday's final in style.

Hungary's dominant swimmer Katinka Hosszu also broke a world record with consummate ease as she took gold in the women's 400m individual medley.

Perhaps the most moving moment of the day saw Syrian refugee Yusra Mardini win her 100m butterfly heat having swam to save her life and many others only a year ago, even if she failed to reach the semi-finals.

Adam Peaty stole the show in the pool with a stunning world record of 57.55 seconds in his 100m breaststroke heat and the 21-year-old is the red-hot favourite for gold in the final on Sunday.

Peaty followed his world record in the heat up with the second fastest time ever of 57.62 seconds to storm into the final which will take place on Sunday.

It was a solid day for tennis stars Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund who progressed and a superb one for William Fox-Pitt who leads the eventing standings after the dressage.

However, it was an inauspicious showing for Britain's road race cyclists as Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas missed out on medals in what was a brutal race.

Biggest shock

Belgium's Greg Van Avermaet snatched gold in a thrilling finish to the men's cycling road race, out-sprinting Denmark's Jakob Fuglsang by the Copacabana after a host of star riders saw their dreams die in a chaotic event.

The 237.5km course promised unpredictability and it delivered in spades as nearly half of the 144 starters failed to finish.

It was a disappointing day for Tour de France champion Chris Froome, who finished 12th after struggling on the final climb and having to change his bike early on, while other star riders crashed out in unceremonious fashion.

A late shock saw Venus Williams of the USA crash out of the women's singles in the tennis at the hands of Belgian underdog Kirsten Flipkens.
