Heather Stanning has hailed her rowing gold medal with Helen Glover as fantastic for women's sport.
Stanning and Glover eased to victory in the women's pair at Eton Dorney yesterday, claiming Team GB's first gold medal of the home Olympic Games.
It is also the first ever women's medal for a British rowing team, and was all the more impressive considering the pair have been rowing for just four years.
Glover, 26, and Stanning, 27, led the race from the start and clocked a time of 7.27 minutes to beat Australia and New Zealand, who claimed silver and bronze respectively.
It follows Lizzie Armitstead collecting the first British medal of the Games, with silver in the women's road race, and three successive victories for the women's football team.
Stanning believes it shows the strength of female athletes in this country.
She said: "I think it is fantastic for women in sport.
"In the last few years women have really been able to step on and this is showing all the efforts we have put in in the last decade or so.
"There have been some fantastic female athletes out there for many years and all their hard work from a long time ago is now coming to the forefront."
