England's Anthony Watson has confirmed he will be staying in the Gallagher Premiership after reportedly attracting interest from a number of French sides. England star Anthony Watson has confirmed he is set to remain in the Gallagher Premiership after returning to Leicester Tigers.
The 29-year-old joined the club in 2022 on a one-year deal, which was not renewed following its expiration at the end of the season. Watson reportedly attracted interest from a number of Top 14 clubs, including Castres, but no deal emerged.
He subsequently signed a training contract with the RFU over the summer and was initially selected for England’s Rugby World Cup squad, but a calf injury ruled him out of the tournament. Watson has now decided to rejoin Leicester Tigers from December.
“Really happy to get the deal over the line and restart my journey with Tigers,” Watson said.
“I really enjoyed being part of the Tigers last year, the squad, staff and fans were class. Ultimately, I came to join a great squad and win things and my goal hasn’t changed.
“I want to contribute to the success of the squad and organisation as much as possible. I’m excited for the year to come with this squad and with the new coaching staff.”

Tigers head coach Dan McKellar added: “To secure a player of Anthony’s quality and experience on a new deal is fantastic news and I am certain our supporters are as pleased as we are with the announcement.
“He has played the game at the highest levels for a number of years and, after only one season at Leicester Tigers, has shown what a great asset he is, and his skill set certainly suits our game and where we want to take it.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming Anthony back into the group in December.”
Watson has 55 England caps, making his debut in 2014 before going on to play for the country at the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. He has also played five Test matches for the British and Irish Lions, touring with the team in 2017 and 2021.
Having risen through the junior ranks at London Irish, where he made his professional debut, Watson then joined Bath Rugby in 2013. He spent a decade at the club, making more than 100 appearances.
The winger made 16 appearances and scored six tries for Leicester Tigers last campaign. The club have made a slow start this season, winning one match out of three to sit eighth in the Premiership table.
