Stuart Lancaster has backed Owen Farrell to follow in Jonny Wilkinson's footsteps and have a big impact when he moves to France to join Racing 92. The French Top 14 side announced the signing of Farrell on a two-year deal from the start of next season. Lancaster gave Farrell his England debut in 2012 and thinks the move will be good for the 32-year-old's mental health.

'I can't confirm or deny' - Lancaster hints Farrell could join him at Racing

Stuart Lancaster believes Owen Farrell could have a similar impact in France as former England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson.
Speculation over Farrell’s future was brought to an end when Racing 92 announced they had signed the 32-year-old on a two-year deal from the start of next season, bringing an end to his 16-year stay at Saracens.
Farrell will link up with former England head coach Lancaster, who gave him his international debut in 2012 and who has tipped him to make a splash in France’s Top 14.
“I can't help but look at Jonny Wilkinson at the same time of his career and what Toulon did for him,” said Lancaster. “Owen is 32, and there's plenty left in him I'm sure.
“Owen has made the decision, a new challenge and why not? His quality and integrity as a person is a big factor for me.”
Wilkinson, one of the best No. 10s of all time, moved to French side Toulon when he was 30 after 12 years with the Newcastle Falcons.
He signed a two-year deal in 2009 but ended up staying for five and was instrumental in back-to-back Champions Cup wins in 2013 and 2014, while he was also named European Player of the Year in 2013.
In the final game of his distinguished career, which included a World Cup win in 2003, Wilkinson kicked 15 points as Toulon beat Castres 18-10 to clinch the Top 14 title in 2014, with both sets of fans singing God Save the Queen at full-time.
It remains to be seen whether Farrell will be able to have the same impact, but Lancaster believes the move will be good for him.
Farrell was the subject of fierce debate ahead of the World Cup after receiving a red card in a warm-up game against Wales and was booed by sections of his own fans despite leading England to a third-place finish in France.
The 32-year-old announced he would be taking some time away from the international game and would therefore be unavailable for Six Nations selection in order to prioritise his and his family’s mental wellbeing.
“Everything is different,” Lancaster added. “I'm coming from Leeds and Cumbria, it's invigorating. That will be good for him.
“He doesn't have to be captain, but enjoy the experience, with his family. He's not coming to dominate and be the captain.”
