Women's Six Nations: England storm to whitewash victory against Scotland in front of record crowd

England beat Scotland 46-0 in Edinburgh on Saturday to continue their unbeaten start to the 2024 Women’s Six Nations.

It was a sell-out crowd at Hive Stadium with a record 7,774 tickets sold, but the impressive home support could not prevent England from storming to another victory over the Scots, who have not beaten the Red Roses in 25 years.

The first try came within six minutes after a dominant England start, with Amy Cokayne bundling over the line from close range.

Abby Dow then finished off a fantastic team effort for the second try, but England’s kicking woes continued as Holly Aitchison missed the opening two conversions.

Scotland managed to shore up their defence after the early onslaught, although they were assisted by the TMO as two England tries were ruled out.

The second try was overturned after Cokayne lifted Evie Gallagher above the horizontal level and was consequently sent to the sin-bin.

England did not seem fazed by losing a player, soon getting on the scoreboard again through Ellie Kildunne. Aitchison then scored the conversion to give the visitors a 17-0 lead at half-time.

The Red Roses secured the bonus point just three minutes into the second half after Sadia Kabeya got the ball down with little resistance. Aitchison was on target again with the conversion, before Jess Breach increased the score to 29-0.

Cokayne was then given her marching orders after making a high tackle, becoming England’s second player to be sent off in the three games.

Scotland could not take advantage of having an extra player, however, with Breach, Kildunne and Marlie Packer all scoring tries to take the score to 46-0.

England host Ireland at Twickenham for their next Women’s Six Nations match on Saturday, April 20, while Scotland travel to Italy seeking their second victory of the tournament.

Elsewhere, Ireland secured their first win of the 2024 Women’s Six Nations with a 36-5 win against Wales.

The victory ended a seven-match losing streak at the tournament for the Irish, who were playing in front of home support at Musgrave Park in Cork.

Aoife Wafer got Ireland’s first try, receiving the ball 10 metres out and driving past Welsh defenders to get it over the line. Dannah O’Brien then scored the conversion to give the hosts a 7-0 lead.

Two more tries followed in quick succession, first from Eve Higgins and then from Neve Jones. O’Brien was on target with both conversions.

Wales made an early tactical change to try and gain momentum, removing number eight Bethan Lewis for Natalia John.

Head coach Ioan Cunningham was then forced to make another change just a few minutes later after inside-centre Kerin Lake suffered an arm injury, with Courtney Keight brought on as a replacement.

He would have been relieved to get in at half-time without any more incidents, despite trailing 21-0, but Ireland soon widened their lead as the second half got underway.

Katie Corrigan closed down a poor clearance from Llecu George, gathering up the ball and charging over the line, before O’Brien scored her fourth conversion of the match.

O’Brien’s kicking prowess was on show again when Ireland were awarded a penalty just a few minutes later, with Beibhinn Parsons then extending the lead to 36-0 to secure the bonus point.

A shell-shocked Wales finally got up and running with a try from debutant Gwennan Hopkins, but could not take all seven points after Kayleigh Powell’s conversion was sliced wide.

Wales now have the tricky task of welcoming France to Cardiff’s Arms Park on Sunday, April 21.
