When O’Sullivan was appointed the Eagles’ head coach in March 2009, it marked a return to the USA for the Irishman, as he had previously served as assistant coach and technical director to USA Rugby from 1997 to 1999. In between, he coached Ireland to three Six Nations Triple Crowns.

Key player: Todd Clever.
The Eagles’ captain and number eight (pictured making tackle) leads by example, and has scored a number of important tries on the international stage. The first American to play in the Super 14 competition, with the South African Lions, he now plies his trade for Suntory in Japan.
2010-11 form:
13/11/10 v Portugal (Lisbon) W 22-17
27/11/10 v Georgia (Tbilisi) L 17-19
8/6/11 v Tonga (Esher, England) L 13-44
18/6/11 v Russia (Worcester, England) W 32-25
6/8/11 v Canada (Toronto) L 22-28
13/8/11 v Canada (Glendale, Colorado) L 7-27
21/8/11 v Japan (Tokyo) L 14-20
World Cup pedigree:
Group stage: 1987, 1991, 1999, 2003, 2007.
Did not qualify: 1995.
Record: P17, W2, D0, L15.
Most appearances: Alec Parker 10.
Most points: Mike Hercus 77.
Most tries: Ray Nelson, Kort Schubert 3.
High:
There have been two highs for the USA at the World Cup – in 1987 and 2003, when they beat Japan for their only wins in the finals. The latter victory was more memorable, as it was by a comfortable 39-26 margin, whereas their other success was a narrow 21-18 affair.
Low:
1995, when they failed to qualify for the tournament for the one and only time, after being beaten twice by Argentina in the qualifying rounds.
Hero: Mike Hercus.
The Eagles’ record World Cup points-scorer ensured their best-ever tally at the tournament in 2003 with 51 of their 86 points from two tries, seven conversions and nine penalties.
Villain: Joel Jutge.
The USA will argue they were penalised out of the game by the French referee in their 2003 pool B encounter with Fiji in Brisbane and so denied third place in the group. Despite scoring two tries to one, the Eagles succumbed 19-18, with Nicky Little kicking four penalties for the Fijians.
2011 prospects:
USA head coach Eddie O’Sullivan will be looking forward with particular relish to the Eagles’ opener against Ireland, having coached many of the Irish team. However, their only chance of a victory looks to be against Russia, whom they beat in the recent Churchill Cup.
Group matches:
11/9/11 v Ireland (New Plymouth)
15/9/11 v Russia (New Plymouth)
23/9/11 v Australia (Wellington)
27/9/11 v Italy (Nelson)
