Argentina scored eight tries against Chile to achieve a 59- 5 scoreline in the first Rugby World Cup match to ever be played between two South American sides.
Tries from the day’s centurion Nicolas Sanchez, Agustín Creevy, Martin Bogado, Rodrigo Isgro, Ignacio Ruiz, Santiago Carreras, and two from Juan Martin Gonzalez kept their quarter-final hopes alive as they’ll face Japan in a winner-takes-all fixture next weekend.
Tomas Dussaillant was the solo scorer for Chile in what was their final Rugby World Cup match of 2023.
Sanchez aptly opened the scoring on his 100th international appearance with a try in the ninth minute and converted his own effort to make the score 7-0.
The fly-half then added a penalty to his tally three minutes later to extend their lead to 10-0.
Their second try came from a rolling maul, and it was Juan Martin Gonzalez who dotted down after a strong effort from the forward pack 15 minutes in, before Sanchez added the extras.
Their third was scored in a similar fashion, set up by another rolling maul, but this time Creevy peeled away and scores on his 104th cap, converted by fellow centurion Sanchez.
Isgro was shown a yellow card for his high swinging arm challenge on Rodrigo Fernandez in the 25h minute which made contact with the Chilean fly-half's head. The decision was sent for an off-field review, and remained at a yellow after it was decided that there wasn't a high degree of danger.
The bonus point was secured five minutes after half-time as RWC debutant Bogado was released through a gap in the middle to score his first try of the tournament. Sanchez added the extras once more.
Chile thought they had scored through Augusto Bohme who passed the ball to Clemente Saavedra at the front of the lineout before receiving a pass back and crossing the line. TMO Ben Whitehouse spotted a forward pass from Saavedra and the try was not given.
The next try for Argentina was scored by Isgro, who sped away after he received the inside pass from Lautaro Bazan Velez and powered towards the line through the tackle from Inaki Ayarza to score under the posts.
Another soon followed, this time a second from Gonzalez who dotted down in the corner.
Chile’s only try was scored by replacement Dussaillant, who scored off the back of a rolling maul in the 72nd minute for a well-deserved five points.
Los Pumas continued to score, and their next came from replacement Ignacio Ruiz who muscled over the line despite Chile’s best defensive efforts. His score was converted by Carreras, who had come on to replace Sanchez.
Carreras had the final word as he raced away to score their final try and then converted it himself to end the match.
