Norway's Anders Bardal was awarded victory in the second FIS Ski Jumping World Cup competition in Bad Mitterndorf following Gregor Schlierenzauer’s controversial disqualification for wearing an illegal suit.
Bardal appeared to be settling for silver as Schlierenzauer pulled off the secondest biggest jump of the second round, 186.0m, to take top spot in the second ski flying competition of the day with an overall total of 381.3 points.
However having caused a delay at the top of the hill as officials clambered to fix what appeared to be a broken zip on his suit he was whisked away at the bottom and swiftly thrown out with the repair not conforming with the rules.
That meant Bardal topped the podium with 364.9 points, after leaps of 197.5m and 183.5m, with Japan’s Daiki Ito, the leader after the first round having jumped 209.0m, second with an overall total of 363.3.
Compounding the Austrian team’s misery was that Kamil Stoch of Poland finished third ahead of three-time Olympic champion Thomas Morgenstern with leaps of 191.5m and 181.5m giving him 358.2.
