Join us again for semi-final Saturday

That's it for our live updates this evening.
We'll be back on Saturday afternoon when the final four players battle for a spot in the final.
Semi-final line-up confirmed:
  • Selby v Xiao
  • Vafaei v Williams

RESULT - SELBY 5-4 LISOWSKI

Selby gets in again very quickly and this time there’s plenty of conviction as he slams down a red to the bottom left corner.
Lisowski knows there will be no coming back this time as the Jester begins to pot with real freedom with frame ball sunk and the pressure now off.
He clears up to the black and books his spot in the last four.

SELBY 4-4 LISOWSKI (38-1)

There’s rarely anything routine about a decider. Even the very best can get jitters and they catch up to Mark once again here.
He sizzles down a long red to the green pocket and looks to be in fine fettle until he comes up way short and can’t find a path to either the blue or the pink without risk. He grimaces and turns down the blue to the yellow pocket, opting for a safety after a run of 26.

SELBY 4-4 LISOWSKI (12-1)

Well, that was ice-cold from Jack. He cuts a sumptuous long red too the bottom left and then snuggles the cue ball tight behind the yellow in baulk to leave Mark with more than a little food for thought.

SELBY 4-4 LISOWSKI (12-0)

Ken Doherty is not impressed by Selby shot choice. The four-time World Champ loses the run of the ball far too early, perhaps revealing some major nerves.
The Jester grimaces as he puzzles over what to do and ends up playing a safety up to baulk having chalked up what he will feel is a disappointing 12 given what was on offer when he first assumed command of the table.

SELBY 4-4 LISOWSKI (1-0)

So, here we go with the deciding frame – Take 2!
Lisowski comes off the right rail trying to lay the cue ball underneath the pack, but he leaves it right of centre – and it’s costly.
Selby guides along red up to the yellow pocket and he’s the one who has the first chance to take charge of this decisive frame.

SELBY 4-4 LISOWSKI (0-1)

There’s drama from the start!
Selby blows a very make-able red after Jack’s poor break-off.
Lisowski redeems himself with a stunning long red to bottom right but a failed cut on the black with one eye on a push into the pack means he doesn’t take it any further.
There’s a stalemate on a the cueball tight to the pack and both players come to a quick decision that a re-rack is the best option!

SELBY 4-4 LISOWSKI

It comes down to two tricky reds near to the left rail.
The first one ‘wipes it’s feet’ on the way in as per the comms of Ken Doherty on ITV4 Comms.
The final red down the left cushion takes even longer to decide if it wants to go down but after a jig and jive with the jaws, it does drop.
From there it’s routine through the colours as a 64 clearance tees us up for a decider.

SELBY 4-3 LISOWSKI (29-22)

‘Go on Jack!’ is the shout from the crowd as Selby contrives to miss a red to bottom right as a result of some very awkward cueing over the pink. The Jester’s run ends on 29 and Lisowski has a big chance to force a decider now.

SELBY 4-3 LISOWSKI (0-22)

Jack lands the opening red and cuts a wonderful blue up to the green pocket to get into the groove.
He looks to be in a strong position on a break of 22 but then blows a blue to the middle right by some distance, crashing into the pack and spreading most of the reds wide open.
It’s a bizarre choice of shot to attack the blue so hard and it could prove very costly…

Table 2 result

Ford 3-5 Xiao - Xiao Guodong will face the winner of Selby v Lisowski after sealing victory with a 140 clearance.

SELBY 4-3 LISOWSKI

Selby gobbles up the loose reds and then cannons into the pack via a pot on the black to bottom left.
It’s not perfect, but he can see a red to left centre that he duly rolls home.
The blue to middle right and a simple cut on a red down to the bottom left provide the angle for a pink to the same pocket.
It sets him up to despatch frame-ball with a red to bottom right. The black follows to the opposite corner and means Jack can get comfy in his seat.
Mark puts on another show but comes up just shy of his second century of the night as a cut on the black to bottom right on 95 doesn’t quite come off.
It’s a shame but he won’t dwell on it as more importantly he is now one frame for reaching the last four.

Table 2 latest

Ford 3-4 Xiao

SELBY 3-3 LISOWSKI (4-1)

Foul – and a miss! Lisowski’s attempt to avoid leaving anything from behind the yellow in baulk goes pear-shaped when he completely misses the red he is targeting. It even leads to Mark asking him if the cue ball deviated off course via the roll of the baize!
Jack shakes his head, takes it on again and makes it count, but he hands the initiative to Selby, who will now get the first serious look at the table’s offering.

SELBY 3-3 LISOWSKI (0-1)

Jack nicks the opening red and then leaves Mark with a conundrum up on the right side of baulk behind the yellow.
The Jester responds with a counter safety that leaves the cue ball nestled tight, underneath the pack.

Table 2 latest

Ford 2-4 Xiao

SELBY 3-3 LISOWSKI

Well, who would have thought it. It’s Selby who comes unstuck when Lisowski lays the counter trap and when the Jester fouls, he decides to cut his losses and concede.
All square and still a tough one to call.

SELBY 3-2 LISOWSKI (38-70)

If anyone’s going to turn around a 0-70 scoreboard and claw back a couple of snookers, it’s going to be Selby.
He lays another superb snooker with the cue ball behind the brown, but Lisowski pulls off another fine escape.

SELBY 3-2 LISOWSKI (38-70)

Is that good or bad? Ask Jack in a few minutes… maybe.
He sizzles down a long red to the yellow pocket but looks aghast when the cue ball follows on.
However, the foul denies Selby the chance to take eight points off the final red (along with an assumed black) and means the four-time world champ needs two snookers to pinch this frame.

SELBY 3-2 LISOWSKI (32-70)

Mark cuts the black to bottom left to nicely manipulate the cue ball up for a red to the yellow pocket. He then works his way back down to prey upon another black.
A tally of 32 seems like a good notch to lay an attempt for a snooker, but Lisowski manages to escape from a clever trap with the red hidden by the yellow and the cue ball far right of baulk.

SELBY 3-2 LISOWSKI (0-70)

It’s a surprisingly slack break-off from Mark and Jack pounces by a despatching a simple enough red to provide himself with the opportunity to respond in kind.
He clatters into the pack via a pot on a red to the left corner and is relieved to get a nice kiss on the red furthest right to land plum on the black.
He doesn’t make the most of the fortune and needs a fine recovery pot on the black and another kiss off the blue to see the gap to a red to bottom left.
The finish line is within sight but he fails to produce the goods on a tight cut on a red to bottom right and his break of 70 isn’t enough to stop Selby coming forward in search of snookers.

Table 2 latest

Ford 2-3 Xiao

SELBY 3-2 LISOWSKI

Mark opens the second session with a super, long red to the bottom left pocket that gives him the platform for the first run post-interval.
He gets the rub of the green when a fine cut at a slow pace on a black to the bottom left just about drops. He’s able to continue to mop up reds just below the pack but leaves himself with work to do when a blast into the pack off a pot on a black to the bottom left doesn’t quite work how he was hoping.
Not to worry though, as he leans into a tough angle on a red to the right corner to get back on track and charge towards frame-ball.
A red to middle left and a simple green leave Lisowski needing a snooker, but there’s no chance of ‘Jack-Pot’ coming to the table as Selby’s surge to a third straight frame continues.
The four-time World champ pops in a blue to middle left and lands perfect on the final red to the bottom right to notch up the century.
It's all about the clearance from that moment on as he cleans up with a 132 to lay down a statement of intent.

SELBY 2-2 LISOWSKI

Selby produces a wonderful safety to land the cue ball right behind the brown tight to the left side of baulk.
Lisowski loses patience and misses with a wild attempt before turning out the bag at the bottom left pocket to effectively concede the frame.
All square as we head into the interval with Selby no doubt the happier of the two players after Jack made the brighter start to the evening.

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (70-40)

Lisowski blinks first, leaving the yellow hovering close to the bottom left corner.
Selby pretty much can’t miss and although he can only chalk up two more points, it’s significant in the fact Jack now needs two snookers once again.

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (68-40)

It wouldn’t be a Mark Selby match without one of these epic tactical tussles.
Lisowski takes care of the final red and lays a trap around the yellow. Selby escapes and turns the tables with a snooker, only for Lisowski to earn a wry smile from the Jester by hitting straight back.
Jack gets a bit of good fortune via a free ball and cuts the black to the bottom right to change the complexion of the frame. It’s up for grabs but neither player can put away the yellow, so on we go!

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (68-26)

Lisowski corks a superb long red down the left rail but can’t quite land on the pink as he’d hope down the opposite cushion. He leans in awkwardly with the rest but shunts the pink against the jaws of the bottom pocket and it could be curtains.
Selby slots in a red and a blue but still can’t get over the line.
Lisowski needs two snookers but insists on continuing.

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (62-25)

Lisowski can’t quite pull off a red to the bottom bag down the right cushion and it allows Selby to lay a trap behind the pink.
Jack fouls with a miss on his first attempt but serves into two reds once again tight to the left rail to escape without leaving anything on.

Table 2 heads into the interval

Ford 2-2 Xiao

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (58-25)

Selby takes on a long red down the right rail but it won’t drop in and all of a sudden the three remaining reds are being pushed into defensive positions. That will probably suit Mark more than Jack.

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (58-25)

Lisowski tries a very tough plant on the two reds north of the middle-left pocket but is some way off producing a sublime pot to the yellow bag.
It stops any major impasse from ensuing but could yet hand the initiative to Selby.

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (58-25)

Mark knocks in a red and a black but can’t quite do enough to stop Jack from returning to the table.

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (50-25)

Jack glides a left to the bottom left and quickly works his way to 25 before being faced by the four remaining reds that will prove key.
He takes on one of the two that make up the remnants of the pack in the middle of the table, but can’t quite pull off a sensational long pot to the green pocket.
Selby will surely put this beyond doubt from here…

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (50-0)

Once again Lisowski’s safety doesn’t stand up well as a double kiss on a red leaves Selby with sight of a separate red to the middle left.
You'd put your house on the Jester to sink it, but he catches the near jaw and offers Jack some hope.
However, Lisowski has a lot of work to do and there are two reds clustered just above the middle-left pocket tight to the rail. It’ll take something special for him to win the frame at this visit.

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI (50-0)

Mark opens his account with a lovely diagonal red clipped from right to left into the bottom corner.
The Jester plays off a couple of red-blue combos to both middle pockets before earning position off the black.
He reaches the half century, but an attempt to break into the pack off the black goes awry and he’s forced to retreat to baulk from there.

SELBY 1-2 LISOWSKI

Selby makes short work of the stray reds and remains unfazed as a couple of attempts to break up a four-ball pack fail.
He keeps trying and a black to the bottom right sees the cue ball shoot up into the pack and finally split it into a frame-winning scenario.
Lisowski can only watch on as a potential 3-0 lead disappears and Selby moves through the gears.
A lovely flick on the final red to move it into a simple pot to middle right off the green puts him within sight of a clearance and he duly achieves it with a break of 98.

SELBY 0-2 LISOWSKI (15-11)

There’s another awed gasp from the crowd as Lisowski gets a very welcome nick off the blue to execute a treble on a red to middle right.
It’s there for the taking and a 3-0 lead but he somehow fails to knock in a sitter of a red to bottom right by catching the near jaw.
Lifeline for Selby.

SELBY 0-2 LISOWSKI (15-0)

Jack tries to guide a red up to middle right but catches the near jaw and it’s go-time for Mark.
The Jester knocks in the red in question and works his way down from the yellow to a red south of the pack.
A routine pack gives him the opportunity to crash the cue ball into pack but he doesn’t get the outcome he was hoping for and has to halt his run at 15.

SELBY 0-2 LISOWSKI

Jack takes full advantage of that miss from Mark with a thumping red to the bottom left to kick off a frame-winning visit.
A deft cut on a pink to the bottom left is followed by a long red that he manages to screw back on to tee up another pop at the pink.
He glances at the scoreboard and recognises that the next red that catches the jaw but drops in the bottom right is the key one. From there it’s all about icing his cake, but he can only chalk up a 38 as he misfires on the black with just one red remaining.

SELBY 0-1 LISOWSKI (3-32)

Selby takes advantage of his opponent’s weak defensive play but can only manage a red and yellow before completely blowing a routine red down to the bottom right. Yes, he was stretching very slightly but for a player of his ilk that’s a real shocker.

SELBY 0-1 LISOWSKI (0-32)

Jack thunders in long red to the bottom left and sets about building another lead, regularly returning to the blue to the middle left to pick off the stray reds.
He eventually tries to explode into the pack via that combo with the blue but doesn’t quite get the result he was hoping for.
A frame-winning visit disappears on his horizon and he retreats to baulk via the blue, although it’s not a particularly strong safety.

Table 2 latest

Ford 1-1 Xiao

SELBY 0-1 LISOWSKI

Jack-Pot, indeed!
Lisowski rattles a long red to the yellow pocket and then plays the shot of the match so far with a quite audacious double. It pretty much seals the frame on a run of 17 as his follow-up effort on a pink to the green pocket doesn’t pay off.
Selby’s had enough though and it is Lisowski who gets on the board first.

SELBY 0-0 LISOWSKI (15-49)

Jack’s safety tight to the bottom rail is far from perfect and Selby mops up the open red to middle left with ease.
The four-time World Champion comes off the baulk cushion and looks to penetrate the remainder of the pack and somehow fails to make impact ending his break at 10. He plays a cute safety behind the black though and has a chuckle when Lisowski gifts him a needless foul with a misjudgement via a lack of pace.
The Jester from Leicester's eyes light up when his opponent overcooks his second effort and he's able to clip a red to bottom right.
It looks good for Mark but he miscues on his very next shot on the black and the crowd can't help but gasp in surprise.
There's a big chance for Lisowski to seal this opener now.

Table 2 latest

Ford 1-0 Xiao

SELBY 0-0 LISOWSKI (0-49)

Lisowski ducks out of a potentially attritional safety ace-off with a gorgeous long red up to the green pocket.
It paves the way for another tidy sequence but Jack-Pot can’t pull clear as a pink to middle right and an attempt to pull a couple of reds free of the pack goes awry near the bottom rail.

SELBY 0-0 LISOWSKI (0-23)

Selby spies a shot for nothing from baulk but the red jumps out of the bottom right pocket, makes a beeline for the opposite corner and jiggles with the jaws before popping out of there too.
Lisowski takes advantage, tucking in a stray red north of the pack to middle right. A pink down to bottom left is then followed by a red to middle left off two cushions and on to the yellow. It brings him down to the red far right of the pack, but he’s working very hard to keep this run going and it’s no real shock when a break of 23 ends with most of the reds still in a largely unattractive position in the lower centre of the table.

Show time!

Intros done and the boys are at the baize. Let's play some snooks.

H2H

Selby leads the match-up 8-7 and has won the last three meetings with Lisowski.
Menawhile, Ford and Xiao are tied at 4-4.

SEMI-FINAL 1 CONFIRMED AFTER ONE-SIDED AFTERNOON SESSION

Hossein Vafaei will meet three-time World champion Mark Williams in the last four.
Williams outclassed Fan 5-1 while Vafaei hit back from two frames down to triumph 5-2.

WELCOME BACK!

Good evening.
Tonight we are down to the last two matches of this year’s British Open quarter finals.
Tom Ford meets Xiao Guodong on Table 2 but our focus will be on the mouthwatering showdown between Mark Selby and Jack Lisowski.
The boys are at the baulk from 19.00 BST.

------------------------------------------------

Join us again from 18.30 BST

We’ll be back with our frame-by-frame updates this evening when we’ll be focusing on the tie of the quarter finals: Mark Selby v Jack Lisowski.
Tom Ford will also be in action when he faces Xiao Guodong on Table 2.

Result - He Guoqiang 2-5 Hossein Vafaei

The Prince of Persia seals victory in style as he flies through a 125 clearance to set up a semi-final meeting with Mark Williams.

Vafaei one frame away from the last four

The Iranian makes it four frames in a row and is now 4-2 up on He Guoqiang.

Table 2 latest

He Guoqiang 2-3 Hossein Vafaei: The Prince of Persia has hit back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 as he returns from the interval with a stunning 134 clearance.

RESULT - WILLIAMS 5-1 FAN

Fan cannot make anything of a very brief return to the table and Williams returns to quickly get over the line. There are still plenty of balls on the table when Fan stands up to offer his hand. Williams was so sharp and was just too good today as he booked his spot in a 64th career semi final.

WILLIAMS 4-1 FAN

Mark’s long-potting has been ‘vintage Williams’ today.
Once again he makes a high-risk attempt from baulk look easy as he guides a long red to the bottom right corner.
Another superb long red down the right rail has the audience gasping with delight and leaves Fan with that sinking feeling.
The Welshman spreads the pack with a rare demonstration of power, making smart use of the blue to middle left before moving back down to red-black combos.
It seems like he’s on the charge for another potential century but comes up short on 42 and gives Fan a slither of hope…

WILLIAMS 4-1 FAN

Fan fails to roll in a red to the bottom right corner and can’t disguise an anxious glance at the cue ball to see where it ends up in baulk.
He doesn’t get the fortune he was hoping for as Williams spies a gap to clip that same red into the pocket his opponent was hoping to have success with.
The Welsh Potting Machine takes full advantage, mixing a ‘careful’ approach with a ‘loose’ one according to regular Eurosport pundit, Alan McManus on ITV4.
It’s a combination that leaves Fan rooted to his seat as the three-time World Champion moves to within a frame of victory with a scintillating 109 clearance.

Table 2 latest

He Guoqiang 2-2 Hossein Vafaei

WILLIAMS 3-1 FAN (15-1)

Fan needed to change the narrative on returning from the interval and he does that simply by knocking in an early red to open the scoring.
Unfortunately for him, he can’t develop it any further and it’s Williams he breaks a brief impasse.
The Welsh veteran can only summon up a run of 15 though as his attempt to crash into the pack doesn’t pay off as he’d hope. He retreats to baulk and we are already involved in more safety than we were throughout the entirety of the opening four frames.

WILLIAMS 3-1 FAN

Mark steps in and cuts a neat red to the bottom left pocket to leave Fan with that sinking feeling.
The Welsh veteran follows up his initial break of 61 with a 43, despite failing to knock the final red into middle left, to take a commanding advantage into the interval.

WILLIAMS 2-1 FAN (61-0)

It’s a decent break-off from Fan, but Williams is jumping all over any slight opportunity. The Welsh Potting Machine thunders a sublime long red to bottom left to once again get first dibs at what the table has to offer.
It’s not an open scenario but Williams works his way to a very tidy 61 with seven reds remaining.
Fan goes for broke on a red up the right rail to the green pocket but misses by some distance and it could well prove fatal in terms of his hopes in this frame.

WILLIAMS 2-1 FAN

Williams goes for broke with an attempt from baulk but does indeed leave himself vulnerable and Fan doesn’t refuse the invitation.
The 2022 European Masters champion quickly eats into Mark’s lead, producing a great pot on a black to the bottom left, using the cue ball to budge a tough red close to the left rail over the middle pocket.
The big moment arrives on the final red along the bottom rail, but he expertly cues it into bottom left and from there it’s just a case of polishing off the colours to complete a superb 80 clearance and reduce the arrears.

Table 2 latest

He Guoqiang 2-0 Hossein Vafaei

WILLIAMS 2-0 FAN (43-14)

Williams can’t convince a long red to drop to bottom right and Fan finally has some options at the table.
The Chinese hopeful clips a red along the bottom rail to the left corner and follows it with the black.
A lovely plant off two reds to the bottom left earns a ripple of applause, but he can’t quite get the crescendo he was hoping for when he blasts the blue into middle left and tries to bring the cue ball off two cushions into the pack. He misses by a whisker, but uses the rest to play a clever safety that opens up the cluster and leaves Williams needing to produce an excellent shot to avoid giving the Chinese a big opening.

WILLIAMS 2-0 FAN (43-0)

Fan misses a slow-paced long red to the bottom left and Mark immediately leaves him to rue it.
The Welshman eyes a red up to middle right and guides it almost effortlessly into the pocket despite less than routine cueing from the bottom rail.
Indeed, Williams appears to have really got to grips with an unforgiving table at times, rarely opting for power and almost caressing his shots into what can be awkward pockets.
This visit sees him clock up another healthy break but when position goes awry up near baulk, he can’t rescue it as he just misses a cannon into the pack following a clever pot on the brown to the yellow pocket.

WILLIAMS 2-0 FAN

Fan takes care of the remaining reds up to the final one, but despite a lovely positional shot off the black to bring the cue ball to the right rail, he can’t find the pot to bottom right to continue his break and develop a situation where he could deploy a snooker.
Williams steps in, slaps away that final red and makes his opponent endure the clearance up to the black. The Welshman was irritated that he allowed Fan to prolong that frame, but he got the job done in the end and is off to a flyer here.

WILLIAMS 1-0 FAN (69-0)

Mark is first to show once again, although he gets an early slice of luck when a red to bottom left jiggles a dance with both jaws before dropping.
The Welshman makes quick work of the loose reds south of the pack and then plays an absolute beauty of a cannon when knocking in the blue to middle left.
It’s so good it even allows for a slight loss of position as he’s able to switch back to the blue once again via a red to middle left.
It looks like being another whopping score, but a surprising miss on a red to the bottom right gives Fan a slither of hope. The Chinese needs a snooker still, but he’s at least been given an opportunity to feel like he’s actually in the match.

OVER ON TABLE 2 ....

He Guoqiang 1-0 Hossein Vafaei

WILLIAMS 1-0 FAN

The Welsh Potting Machine opens his account with a lovely, dead-weight red from baulk to the bottom left corner.
He follows it with a tricky black cut to the opposite corner to develop easier position and give himself a real chance right from the off.
It’s highly impressive from the 48-year-old given it’s his first two shots of the contest and from there he slips seamlessly into his groove.
It’s intelligent snooker throughout as he preys upon the pink and blue with heavy helpings of the black to move towards frame ball, which is perhaps the trickiest shot since his first two.
He doesn’t blink as he tickles a red tight to the bottom rail into the left corner and from there it’s about whether he passes the century mark or not.
Of course, he does as he sizzles a black to the bottom right to earn rapturous applause, manipulating the cue ball back into mid-table to then finish off the final red with aplomb.
The veteran has the highest break of the tournament in his sights and mops up the colours to duly claim it with a magnificent 138 clearance. Not a bad start from the three-time World Champion.

Table 1 focus

We'll be concentrating on Williams against Fan with score updates from the table 2 clash between He Guoqiang and Vafaei.

Friday fun in Cheltenham

We've got Vafaei and Williams in early afternoon action in their respective matches, but that's not all that's on the agenda today.
Later, Mark Selby faces Jack Lisowski in arguably the tie of the last eight while Tom Ford locks horns with Xiao Guodong.

Best-of-nine

A reminder that this stage of the competition means it's effectively a first to five frames scenario.

H2H

It looks like this is the first tour meeting between He Guoqiang and Vafaei while Williams leads his match-up with Fan 1-0 having prevailed 5-3 in the German Masters back in 2018.

GOOD AFTERNOON!

Hello and welcome to our LIVE updates from the quarter finals of the British Open.
First up in the afternoon action, we've got He Guoqiang taking on Hossein Vafaei and Mark Williams against Fan Zhengyi. The boys will be at the baulk from 13.00 BST.

Selby beats Gilbert on final black to set up quarter-final clash with Lisowski at British Open

Mark Selby beat David Gilbert in a final-frame decider to reach the quarter-finals of the British Open in a late-night finish in Cheltenham.
It was not vintage snooker on display at the Centaur in Cheltenham, but there was no shortage of drama for a match that finished after midnight.
It boiled down to a battle on the final black, and in dramatic scenes at 00:38, Gilbert saw the white go in-off to hand Selby the win.
