Ali Carter was the highest profile casualty on the opening day of action at the German Masters at the Tempodrom in Berlin.
The world number 17 was ousted from the tournament by Dechawat Poomjaeng, who posted a 5-4 victory to progress to the second round.
Thai Poomjaeng, ranked 60th after December's UK Championship, will next play China's Xiao Guodong, a 5-1 winner against veteran Jimmy White.
Former world champion Steve Davis was also sent packing, the 56-year-old falling to a 5-2 defeat against Dominic Dale, but there was better news for another former world number one, John Higgins, who saw off Gerard Greene 5-2.
Current top dog in the world of snooker Neil Robertson had no problems in his opening match as the Australian downed Liu Chang 5-1 while Mark Selby, who trails Robertson at the top of the rankings, eased past Jimmy Robertson 5-1.
There were also wins for third-ranked Ding Junhui and Barry Hawkins.
