That'll do us

Thanks for your company tonight, we'll be back with more of the German Masters for you tomorrow.

Anthony Hamilton 3-3 Jamie Jones
Jack Lisowski 5-2 Matthew Stevens
Mitchell Mann 1-5 Ricky Walden
Mark Williams 5-2 Sanderson Lam

Judd Trump beats Ashley Hugill

It was far from vintage, but it was good enough. Tonight Judd missed a fair few pots he seemingly makes with his eyes shut when in rhythm, but Ashley couldn't get going enough to capitalise and was held at arms length for the duration of the match. Judd won here in 2020 and 2021, but will have to shake off the inevitable rust from the summer recess if he's to win this for the third time. He'll be back to face Andrew Higginson tomorrow.

Trump 5-3 Hugill

An eventual 81 puts Judd through to the next round.

Trump 4-3 Hugill (73-0)

We're done here. Judd makes sure of frame ball red, and the pink to follow makes it certain. Ashley's done well to make a game of it, but just hasn't punished Judd's mistakes tonight.

Trump 4-3 Hugill (53-0)

It's like the flick of a switch; Judd races to 53 and if he can mop up just three of the remaining loose reds he'll be home and hosed. Ashley can only sit there, hoping.

Trump 4-3 Hugill (19-0)

There's a dead-set three ball plant on to the bottom right for Judd at the start of frame eight, and he kabooms it in to hold for the pink. The reds have split as a result, but the black is out of commission. Blue and pink are both in acres though, so it's a chance for frame and match.

Trump 4-3 Hugill

He can! This is a show of moxie from Hugill, who hasn't played well but has won two on the spin. Game on!

Trump 4-2 Hugill (52-64)

In escaping the self-imposed snooker Judd flukes one of his own, forcing a four-point foul before Ashley connects. Judd then goes in-off, and after a safety exchange on the yellow Judd misses a yellow to the bottom left, and he's left the frame on! Ashley needs up to and including the pink. A poor shot from green to brown requires a good recovery pot, and the blue that follows leaves a nasty pink across the table and into the bottom left. Can he convert it?

Trump 4-2 Hugill (48-46)

This could be trouble. One poor shot when potting a red - wobbling it in the bottom left - makes the next couple increasingly difficult, and Ashley eventually misses a tough cut back on a black into the bottom right. It's all in the open for Judd, if he plays the reds in the right order to leave one adjacent to the pink on to the bottom left. Judd gets the mop out, with Ashley looking to the floor while sat in his chair. Judd canons the red away from the pink, because he can, and takes the lead as he pots the black after the final red to go up for the colours. Have a look though - he's snookered himself on the yellow! Ashley is still in it.

Trump 4-2 Hugill (0-37)

Judd catches the pack very thick from a safety, and leaves a mid-range red over the bottom left. This is a good chance for Ashley, and some deft work to clear the black spot takes him to 28 and a great chance to now pull another frame back.

Trump 4-2 Hugill (0-9)

Hello hello, what's this? It's as late as possible in the day for a stirring comeback, but Ashley is going the right way about it; he clatters a long red into the bottom left to start frame seven, followed by a nerveless yellow into the green pocket. He's not scored all night though and fails to again here when a canon into a red to hold for another doesn't work out and he's on nothing.

Around those tables in Furth

Dominic Dale 2-3 Jimmy White
Anthony Hamilton 2-2 Jamie Jones
Jack Lisowski 3-2 Matthew Stevens
Mitchell Mann 1-4 Ricky Walden
Mark Williams 3-2 Sanderson Lam

Trump 4-2 Hugill

A 41 from Ashley leaves Judd needing a snooker. When Ashley then lays a snooker tight in behind the yellow, Judd stays rooted in his chair and waves it off.

Trump 4-1 Hugill (4-50)

It's now fifty in the frame for Ashley, who is zoning in on the frame now. There are two reds just below the pink spot that go into both bottom corners, and if he can mop those up that should do it.

Trump 4-1 Hugill (4-23)

Judd misses a tough long red to the bottom left at the start of frame six, leaving an easy starter for Ashley into the right middle. A heavy visit here will prolong the argument, but after finishing very low on the black to reach 23, Ashley then misses said black to the bottom right while forcing the pack open. In steps Judd again, but just as you fear that might be Ashley's lost shot in this tournament, a red to bottom right across the table doesn't go, and there's a load on.

Trump 4-1 Hugill

Now we're done. Ashley leaves the final red on to the green pocket, and Judd drains it followed by the pink to end the argument. He then clears to the pink to put himself one frame away from victory.

Trump 3-1 Hugill (58-25)

This is a lovely shot from Judd, dropping in behind a red to leave it as a close jab to the right middle. That goes and brings up the half-century, but just as the frame looks a formality he loses position on frame ball colout, landing between pink and black but on neither. That's a touch for Ashley! Judd plays safe off the black, and we've still got a live one.

Trump 3-1 Hugill (32-25)

Yikes. On 24 Ashley plays a nice shot to drop in behind a red on the bottom of the pack. It looks simple enough to jab it into the bottom right with the rest, but he doesn't cut into it enough and he's left it over the pocket. Judd steps in, and it takes a few shots to lasso position before he splits the pack slightly off one cushion when potting the green, before scattering them a few shots later. He's soon in front in the frame, with two reds near the left rail looking like Ashley's only potential saviours here in frame five.

Trump 3-1 Hugill (4-1)

We're back, and from Judd's break Ashley's only shot is a long red to the bottom left. He takes it on and creams it into the pocket, but lands welded to the upper right rail and can't convert the green to follow. Ashley seems minded to go for everything now, and soon after takes on a tough red down the rail to the bottom left. He misses by a big margin though, and leaves it over the left middle. A big break looks inevitable, until Judd misses a shocker of a red to the bottom right and leaves it! Lorks a lordy. What a chance now for Ashley, who simple must cash in big here you feel.

Around the tables

Elsewhere in Furth tonight:
Dominic Dale 2-2 Jimmy White
Anthony Hamilton 1-2 Jamie Jones
Jack Lisowski 2-2 Matthew Stevens
Mitchell Mann 1-2 Ricky Walden
Mark Williams 2-2 Sanderson Lam

Trump 3-1 Hugill

That'll do it; Judd doubles one of the remaining reds followed by the black, and leads 3-1 at the interval.

Trump 2-1 Hugill (64-13)

A black to bottom right brings up the half-century, leaving Judd needing just red-colour-red for the frame. Red-black-red disappear, but he can't cut back a black into the bottom left to definitively end Ashley's interest in the frame. On we go, with Ashley needing two snookers to tie.

Trump 2-1 Hugill (26-13)

Double bubble here for Judd, who drains a long red over the bottom left and sends the one he was using to hold for the pink into the right middle. Wahey, as some people say! a few shots later, Judd plays a beautifully deft double kiss on the black when potting a red, bringing the seven-pointer off the bottom cushion and leaving Ashley now fearing the worst in this one.

Trump 2-1 Hugill (1-13)

It's a poor break from Ashley to start frame four, almost slicing the blue into the right middle and leaving a red to the bottom right. Judd drains it, but then plays a shocker of his own by missing a simple black to the bottom left with his mind on a canon to an adjacent red. Now then, Ashley; here's a good look at going into the interval all-square. It's a chance, but he makes just 13 before missing a red across the table to the bottom left.

Trump 2-1 Hugill

Judd plays on, potting a red-black before trying to get a snooker and a free ball. He's soon in a snooker himself though from which he can't escape, and Ashley snags a free ball of his own before clearing to the pink to put a frame on the board.

Trump 2-0 Hugill (18-69)

This is better from Ashley, who opens the remaining reds off the blue and leaves the frame at his mercy. All the reds he needs to get over the line are in the open, and a swift 35 and counting leaves Judd needing a snooker. The green follows before Ashley plays safe, and with 43 remaining on the table Judd needs two snookers to tie.

Trump 2-0 Hugill (18-31)

It's easy to say don't get rattled when Judd flies out of the traps, but Ashley is playing some tentative hsots and struggling for position here. Eventually it costs him; hampered by the brown in baulk, he misses a red to the green pocket and leaves it there. Ashley's break is toast on 27, but there's plenty of work for Judd to do to punish this in full in one visit. Sure enough, Judd soon drifts out of position too, and misses a green to the yellow pocket with the rest to let Ashley back in.

Trump 2-0 Hugill (4-17)

Both players trade four point fouls at the start of frame three, before Judd misses a mid-range red to the bottom left by a huge margin. Ashley has a hand-on-table chance, and a couple of good recovery shots on a blue and a red early doors keeps his break moving.

Trump 2-0 Hugill

Judd puts the frame to bed double quick, and clips the final red into the left middle with a touch of side to keep the possibility of his first ton of the season alive. An effortless long blue into the bottom left follows, as does the three figures; a 118 goes in the books as Judd empties the table.
In other news, as pointed out by Angles McManus in co-comms, it's the 64th birthday of the inimitable Kirk Stevens today. Many happy returns, Captain Kirk!

Trump 1-0 Hugill (55-1)

An excellent shot here from Judd, in and out of baulk after finishing on the wrong side of the blue to land bullet straight on his next red, has got the Jaws music going in this frame. The half-ton is in the post and with the remaining reds all in the open, this one looks done as his break hits 48.

Trump 1-0 Hugill (26-1)

What a nightmare here for Ashley. He drains a brilliant red to the bottom right from mid-range, but in stunning the black in thereafter he nudges into an adjacent red and sends it into the left middle. That's seven and the advantage away, and Judd is wasting little time cashing in his good fortune.

Trump 1-0 Hugill

Judd wobbles a loose red into the green pocket, and soon after converts the remaining red down the rail into the bottom left. It looks curtains from here, and is; Judd mops up to the blue to take the lead.

Trump 0-0 Hugill (47-42)

Ashley loses the white early in the break but an excellent recovery pot on the black, deadweight and cut back to the bottom left, opens this right up for him. With two reds to go he loses the white again after finishing high on the blue, and although that goes he then misses a tough red to the bottom left to bring his break clanging to a halt. Judd can't convert a red to the bottom right though, so Ashley gets another bite...but he's missed a red into the yellow pocket and Judd is back in.

Trump 0-0 Hugill (47-0)

Judd is slightly out of position, and has to force the white through the pack when potting a red into the bottom left. It only leaves a difficult pink, which he has to take on as a stray red has landed on the lip of the left middle. Judd takes it on the the yellow pocket, but misses by several inches and it's a chance for Ashley.

Trump 0-0 Hugill (23-0)

There could be bother here for Ashley. He misses a thin contact safety, landing the white into the back of the pack as a result and leaving an easy starter to the left middle for Judd. That goes, and Judd lands on the blue; within seconds, it's 22 and counting. A good recovery red, swerving the red marginally past the pink to pot into the bottom right, keeps things trucking.

Here we go

The players walk out into the Stadehalle in Furth, and we're all set. Judd breaks, let's get about it.

Memory lane

Judd Trump has won this tournament twice, in 2020 and 2021. During the latter triumph he drained this utterly preposterous pot, which was later voted Shot of the Season.

Wilson 5-1 Lyu

Breaks of 60, 72 and 111 the highlight of Wilson's performance with Lyu's 49 in the sixth frame not enough to dent the Kettering man's impressive cue ball control in advancing to the last 32.

Wilson 4-1 Lyu (64-50)

Wilson clears to the pink and he is through to the last 32 as a 5-1 winner. Just too much scoring power on the day from the former Shanghai Masters champion. He will face Jimmy Robertson in the next round.

Wilson 4-1 Lyu (36-50)

Break moves to 31 with supreme ease, but he can't tickle in a fine cut on a red. Lyu responds with a magnificent long red seconds later. Two reds left up and Lyu misses a brown to a centre pocket. Will that be his last shot of match?

Wilson 4-1 Lyu (1-49)

Blistering long red at the outset of the sixth frame from Lyu. That took real bravery after being frozen out for so long. Vital that he puts down a marker at this visit. Break reaches 49 before position goes astray via pot on pink. Tough cut on red fails to drop and Wilson is back at the table.

Wilson 3-1 Lyu (80-4)

A break of 47 to go with the earlier contribution of 33. A 4-1 lead as Lyu reaches the point of no return. The young Chinese player has registered only 21 points in the past three frames.

Wilson 3-1 Lyu (80-4)

Another fabulous long red by Wilson down to the green pocket and he can see the winning post in this frame. Not looking for too many more for a 4-1 lead. Looks like he can't miss at the moment. A match with former European Masters winner Jimmy Robertson awaits if he can win one more frame out there.

Wilson 3-1 Lyu (33-4)

No frame-winning knock in this fifth frame, but a vibrant contribution before he rolls in another exceptional long red from the baulk cushion seconds later. The confidence and belief are clearly there.

Wilson 3-1 Lyu (31-0)

Wilson right back in the old routine right away here. Sinks a long red, lands on blue and this all feels a bit ominous for the bloke in the opposite chair.

Wilson 3-1 Lyu (0-0)

WIlson will enjoy his 15-minute break for a cuppa better than Lyu you suspect. Looking for two more frames to reach the last 32 of the season's second ranking event.

AROUND THE TABLES: WEDNESDAY'S LATEST SCORES

Second round

  • Lyu Haotian 1-3 Kyren Wilson
  • Jackson Page 2-1 Yuan Sijun
  • Stuart Carrington 1-1 Jordan Brown

  • Jak Jones 1-1 Robert Milkins
  • Mark Joyce 0-2 Sean O'Sullivan
  • Michael Judge 3-4 Daniel Wells

  • Farakh Ajaib 5-2 Barry Pinches
  • Li Hang v Zhao Xintong (walkover)
  • Dylan Emery 4-5 Yan Bingtao

Wilson 2-1 Lyu (112-0)

Very consistent cue action and world No. 43 Lyu looks to be in a spot of bother. Four frames in barely an hour and three of them are going to fall to Wilson. Century 338 of his career and a second of the season. Terrific stuff. A closing knock of 111 to go with 72 in the third frame. He leads 3-1 at the break.

Wilson 2-1 Lyu (83-0)

Superb level of play here from Kyren. Really cueing the ball delightfully well. Break reaches 70 with chance to register a century.

Wilson 2-1 Lyu (26-0)

A magical long red by Wilson at the outset of the fourth frame. Was leaving plenty on if it didn't disappear. But it does and he has options here again. Final frame before the mid-session interval as break moves to 26.

Wilson 1-1 Lyu (72-17)

Lovely break of 72 from the world No. 8 and he leads 2-1 in the race to five. Lyu missed a black and ended up sitting down for the rest of the third frame. Can't afford to be missing balls like that at the elite level of sport.

Wilson 1-1 Lyu (17-17)

Lyu first to the punch in this third frame, but he overcuts a black and Wilson is presented with chance to punish the error. Opens break with a superb rest shot on black. Made that look easy. How many will he score here?

AROUND THE TABLES: WEDNESDAY'S SCORES

Second round

  • Lyu Haotian 1-1 Kyren Wilson
  • Jackson Page 1-1 Yuan Sijun
  • Stuart Carrington 1-0 Jordan Brown
  • Aaron Hill 2-0 Barry Hawkins
  • Jak Jones 1-0 Robert Milkins
  • Mark Joyce 0-1 Sean O'Sullivan
  • Michael Judge 3-4 Daniel Wells
  • Zhang Anda 3-5 Shaun Murphy
  • Oliver Lines 1-5 Andrew Higginson
  • Farakh Ajaib 5-2 Barry Pinches
  • Li Hang v Zhao Xintong (walkover)
  • Dylan Emery 4-5 Yan Bingtao

Wilson 1-0 Lyu (8-85)

Wilson butchers a safety shot and this is heading for 1-1. Lyu utterly dominant in that second frame. A wry smile from Wilson. Game on in Furth.

Wilson 1-0 Lyu (8-57)

Decent lead for Lyu of 49 points, but not quite safe in this frame yet with five reds left up and out in the open. Takes the chance to knock a red onto a side cushion.

Wilson 1-0 Lyu (8-29)

Safety error by Wilson presents Lyu with an opportunity to seize the lead in this second frame. Black at the wrong end of table, but can do some damage here with reds and pinks in his quest to restore parity at 1-1.

Wilson 1-0 Lyu (4-8)

These men have met only once in the first round of last year's European Masters with Wilson running out a 5-2 winner on that occasion.

Wilson 0-0 Lyu (76-37)

Wilson tidies up the final few balls to finish off this frame. The Furth crowd give a knowing round of applause. First frame of the day falls to 'The Warrior'.

Wilson 0-0 Lyu (67-29)

Lovely break of 60 from Wilson. Lyu needing two snookers to avoid losing the first frame. Fine frame management from the former German Masters champion. Should be a 1-0 lead coming up, but Wilson hits the red and goes in off to a middle pocket attempting to escape from a snooker. No free ball which would have been so costly for Wilson. Lyu now needing one snooker.

Wilson 0-0 Lyu (44-25)

A safety error by Lyu from a tactical exchange and Wilson has been presented with a second opportunity to exert himself. Cue ball control is all important at this visit because here is a decent chance to contribute some points.

Wilson 0-0 Lyu (1-25)

Lovely opening red by Wilson, but then misses a brown off the spot. Early and obvious chance for 24-year-old Lyu to get that cue arm working. But he breaks down on 25 as a black stays out. Chances come and go for both men.

14:30 – Selby stunned in first round

The 2020 European Masters winner suffered a shock 5-2 loss to Yuan Sijun despite this lovely 137 break.

14:20 – Welcome back to Furth

Should be an enthralling afternoon of snooker in Germany as 2020 world finalist Kyren Wilson meets 2019 Indian Open finalist Lyu Haotian in the second round of the European Masters. First man to five frames books their place in the last 32.
