The German Masters is back – and this year's edition promises to be the most unpredictable in years. With the likes of Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump, Mark Allen and Mark Selby all absent, the few remaining top-ranked players have a huge opportunity for a trophy run in Berlin. One of the most open ranking tournaments in years begins in Berlin on Wednesday as the 2023 German Masters takes stage.
Unlike many other tournaments, all players competed in qualifying before the main draw commenced, meaning there are a host of big-name absentees from the Tempodrom show. Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump, Mark Allen and Mark Selby – the top four in the world rankings – will all miss out on the tournament after being eliminated in qualifying.
It leaves Neil Robertson, Kyren Wilson, Luca Brecel and Jack Lisowski as the biggest names in an unusual field, which features Eurosport star Jimmy White, who is hoping to end his 19-year ranking title drought.
Zhao Xintong, the defending champion, is also not in the line-up as he is currently suspended as a match-fixing investigation continues.
Four players – Tom Ford, Jimmy Robertson, Ali Carter and Ricky Walden – are already through to the last 16 before the tournament proper begins.
