German Masters snooker 2024 final LIVE – Judd Trump overcomes Si Jiahui to claim title again

Updated 05/02/2024 at 11:06 GMT

Hello and welcome back to Eurosport's live coverage of the 2024 German Masters. We've reached the final and it's set to be a truly fascinating clash as two-time winner Judd Trump – one of the in-form players of the season – takes on Crucible semi-finalist Si Jiahui. Trump built a 5-3 lead after an absorbing opening session as he chases his fourth title victory of the season in ranking events.

Trump – aka 'the winning machine' – wins third German Masters crown

That's all from us

Right, brilliant entertainment, and congratulations to Judd on another title - and to Si on a fantastic week. Thanks for joining us!

Trump delighted with another title in Germany

"I just want to thank everybody who came here this week and supported the event. The crowds have been amazing. This is definitely one of my favourite events on the calendar.
"It's been an amazing season so far. I think I've reached seven finals, six ranking finals, and this is my fourth win. Every tournament is special, but when you get to play in front of a crowd like this, and lift the trophy, it's the kind of moments you remember at the end of your career."

What the players have to say

Si, on reaching his first final, says "I had an incredible run to the final, but after all, my opponent is Judd, he's an amazing player. I have a lot to learn from him. I enjoyed this week."

What a year for Trump!

This is Judd's fourth title of the year, one top of losing a further three finals. Incredible.

Trump 10-5 Si (82-16)

In fact, he misses the next blue, but the frame is won - and so is the title! Judd Trump is the German Masters champion for a record third time!

Trump 9-5 Si (*82-16)

And now a very special red to the middle, into which he has potted brilliantly this evening. There's not enough on there to finish with a century, but there's some naughty snooker

Trump 9-5 Si (*65-16)

Two further reds, both accompanied by pinks, mean he is one ball from the winning line. It's not a gimme, using the rest to cut into the left corner, but he sends it into the heart of the pocket. Another pink, again with the rest, makes doubly sure

Trump 9-5 Si (*44-16)

Indeed, he soon gets the pink back on its spot, which makes things a lot easier. All of a sudden, he's in that position where he's scoring incredibly quickly again. Four reds left on the table. Very, very good position to be in.

Trump 9-5 Si (*11-16)

And that's advantage Trump, because the red he misses is left in a pottable position to the left corner. It's not going to be easy from here, as the blue and pink are off their spots, and the black is pretty tied up. But with the way he's played tonight, would you bet against him?

Trump 9-5 Si (1-16)

A tough bit of luck for Si, though, who goes into the pack off the next red, but is snookered on the black. His response? To smash the yellow, from a ridiculously long distance, into the pocket. But he then misses then next red!

Trump 9-5 Si (1-13*)

So, five frames to go and Si needs all of them. He thinks he's played a good enough safety when rolling into the pack from the top cushion, but Trump bridges over and finds a red to the right corner. He then misses a blue, much to the surprise of everybody watching, though. That means his opponent has a chance to score some points of his own, and he duly starts building a break.

Trump 9-5 Si (92-32)

There won't be a dramatic comeback either. Si leaves the final red of the left corner. Trump cleans up and he's only one frame from the title! Glory is getting closer!

Trump 8-5 Si (66-32)

Si bounds back to the table to clear up a loose red, and he knows he can still take this frame. He reaches 32 before attempting to move the final red, which isn't far from the right cushion and the middle pocket. He misses the contact after potting the black. End of break, but an excellent safety sending the white on to the top cushion, behind the black, while the red is near the baulk line.

Trump 8-5 Si (66-0)

When Trump's in this kind of mood, he scores very, very quickly, and he's doing just that on this visit. He reaches 52 and rejects the chance to go into the cluster of five reds near the pink spot, an opportunity he takes off the black two shots later. However, he doesn't get the contact right, brushing off them and failing to leave a pot. At least, it looks that way, until he drills home a sensational plant that leaves even Si applauding. He misses his next shot though, and the frame is still live - just.

Trump 8-5 Si (*19-0)

We haven't had too many frames that have been slow starters, but this one takes a little while to get going before Trump sinks a delightful red to the left middle, again finding it out of nowhere. That's dangerous for Si, because Judd is in amongst the pack, with both pink and black available.

Trump 8-5 Si (18-76)

And the winning line in this frame has now duly been passed. A visit of 64 proves enough to win the frame, before missing the penultimate red up to the green pocket. Five to go for him for the title.

Trump 8-4 Si (18-65*)

This has been very calm and composed from Si, especially given how much his back is up against the wall. He keeps nudging ball into play, and has managed to do so despite the pink being out of commission. There's one particularly good run through, off three cushions, to play for the black back into the red corner.

Trump 8-4 Si (18-27*)

Trump gets into a position where he feels his only option is to pot his way out of trouble, but he can't sink the red. Even worse, he leaves one for Si to clean up. The Chinese players' cue ball isn't ideal, heading up to the baulk end, but he can still pot the green. A few shots later, he's got things under control, and he's able to open up the pack as well.

Trump 8-4 Si (18-8)

For only the second time this evening, we're in for a little bit of safety play. Trump does pot one red, but no colour follows. There have been some very tidy shots in this exchange, and some excellent escapes from tricky positions too. Who will blink first?

Trump 8-4 Si (17-8)

The red that Trump missed is left near to the right corner, and Si pots it, before adding the black. He's barely registered a break since that century in the opening frame of the evening though, and it tells. He can't convert a second red, missing by a distance.

Trump 8-4 Si (17-0)

Si needs a good start, but in fact has a disastrous one. He attempts a thin safety on a red to the left of the pack, but misses contact and sees the cue ball come back up the table and dribble into the yellow pocket. With white in hand, Trump drills home an opening pot, accompanied by a pink, before a further red and blue. His positional play isn't great though, and his break comes to an end on 13 after missing a third red by a long way.

Here we go again

Okay; the boys are back. It's 8-4 in a race to ten. Trump needs two frames for a third German Masters title, Si needs six of the remaining seven to land his first ranking event. Either way, we're playing to a conclusion from this point.

Mid-session interval viewing

So, while we're having a brief hiatus from the action, feast your eyes on this genial bit of play from Si from earlier in the tournament.

Trump 8-4 Si (81-0)

Well, the run of centuries is over after he fails to move either of the two reds on the left cushion, but a splendid 74, arguably better than the two 100+ scores that he delivered in the previous two frames. Either way, he's got a four frame lead and is in the box seat for the title.

Trump 7-4 Si (*67-0)

It's a mark of how hard work this break has been that with four reds left on the table, he has only just passed the snookers required stage. The visit stands at 60, but he's got his eyes on another century, especially after a cannon opens up further potting options.

Trump 7-4 Si (*31-1)

I say he's in, but this has not been easy for Judd. Every red is accompanied by a low value colour, because the pink it relatively tied up, the blue is off its spot and the black, well he just hasn't been able to get close to it. The potting has been outstanding though. Four reds and colours before he finally lands on the black, and it should be a touch smoother from here.

Trump 7-4 Si (*12-1)

Ah. Now there's a big chance for Judd. A huge error of judgement from Si, who plays a safety off a red, which cannons into the black, that subsequently rolls into the right corner. Trump is left a tough long red to the same pocket, but it's another pot that whistles into the pocket. The next shot is truly remarkable. A screw back off the green, to find a pot on a red at the other end of the table. He's in again.

Trump 7-4 Si (0-1)

34 minutes have elapsed since Si last potted a ball, but he's left a red to the left corner which he drills home, screwing the cue ball back up the table. Sadly for the Chinese player, he screws back into no man's land, and is forced to play safe off the brown.

Trump 7-4 Si (116-3)

108 the final contribution before missing the blue, but Trump won't care whatsoever. He's now only three frames from the title! What a start!

Trump 6-4 Si (*104-3)

Trump cleans up the three remaining reds, each accompanied by a high-value colour, to move on to 99 for the break. A simple yellow is all that's needed for a third century in a row, and it duly goes down. That's a 66th century of the season for Judd Trump - he's 28 clear of his nearest contender in that leaderboard!

Trump 6-4 Si (*78-3)

And he opens up a cluster of three reds beautifully, rolling into them off the black. Frame ball follows shortly afterwards. Now our attentions turn to potentially a third century in three frames this evening. He looks in superb touch, it must be said

Trump 6-4 Si (*53-3)

Again, the cue ball positioning has been excellent during this visit from Trump. Being a left hander has helped him out on a couple of occasions, meaning he can stretch instead of use the rest. But his potting has been spotless. The winning line in this frame is coming within sight, but he has to open up some reds to get there.

Trump 6-4 Si (*19-0)

The good news for Trump is Si has a horrible safety shot to play now, because Judd has scattered the reds in missing his previous pot. His opponent cannot find a safe place on the table, and the Ace in the Pack duly whistles home a terrific opening red, holding for the brown in doing so. This looks like a much better chance to put up a sizeable break,

Trump 6-4 Si (8-0)

Si attempts a risky red which opens the pack up. He misses, but has more than half an eye on getting the cue ball back up the table, which he does successfully. However, he's not left it safe. Trump has a long, straight red to the left corner, which he strokes home. He's in, with his hand on the table again, but breaks down on eight when he attempts a three ball plant that does not go terribly well.

Trump 6-4 Si (113-3)

It certainly will be a century, and he didn't even need to move those reds! Some 'naughty snooker' follows once reaching three figures, eventually accumulating 113 before running out of position on the brown. He's two clear again.

Trump 5-4 Si (*84-3)

And he's past the snookers required stage now. Could we see another century? He'll have to develop the reds a little further, particularly one on the left cushion. But you wouldn't back against him.

Trump 5-4 Si (*54-3)

This has been a delightful visit from Judd, epitomised by a terrific run-through shot to open the pack up. The way he's manipulated the cue ball into gaps has been superb. From here, he's very much expected to win the frame.

Trump 5-4 Si (*17-3)

Well; we looked destined for a re-rack! We've just had four or five minutes of Trump rolling the ball into the pack, and Si rolling the cue back to the top cushion! Eventually though, with members of the audience getting twitchy, Judd finds a terrific red to the left middle. That came out of nowhere, and he's suddenly up and running.

Trump 5-4 Si (0-3)

It's not been a particularly good start to the evening for Judd. Si's break off leaves a long red to the left corner, and he misses by a long way. It didn't sound good off the cue, whatsoever. Si tidies that away, and adds the yellow, but then criminally misses a pretty easy red to the right. A let off, for Trump.

Trump 5-4 Si (0-123)

You bet he can! A total clearance of 123, and absolutely nothing Trump could do to stop him. The perfect start to the evening for Si, who moves to within one of Trump.

Trump 5-3 Si (0-83*)

One more red needed, and Si attempts to break up a cluster of three near the pink spot, but misses. No bother, however. He just takes the other red left on the table, a clip back into the left corner. Perfectly delivered, and that split comes shortly afterwards too. Frame done and dusted. Can he deliver a century?

Trump 5-3 Si (0-65*)

Si has had a few problems on the blue today, and that trend continues as he sees the cue ball spring off the far cushion and roll towards the baulk colours. He takes the brown instead, playing left handed, as he does with a red down the cushion. Two lovely rescue pots to get back into position.

Trump 5-3 Si (0-36*)

A brave decision to go into the pack early on from Si, and he spreads them nicely. Just as importantly, the cue ball comes away from the reds, leaving him one to pot. This is now a very good opportunity to reduce the deficit.

Trump 5-3 Si (0-16*)

Si could barely dream of a better start to the session, as he sinks a long red that had come away from the pack off the break off. He takes a pink off his second red, which is re-spotted quite literally in the middle of a cluster of seven reds. As Neal Foulds points out on commentary, it's safe to say it doesn't go in to any pockets now!

Here we go!

There's a packed house in Berlin for the final session of the tournament. Judd Trump and Si Jiahui join us to rapturous applause.

Eyes on the prize

It would be quite the comeback if Si managed to lift the trophy. This is his first major ranking event final, and is in fact only the second time he has reached the last four of a main tour event - the other being last year's World Championship.
Judd on the other hand is no stranger to the winners' enclosure. He's attempting to lift the German Masters trophy for third time, having tasted glory in 2020 and 2021 by beating Neil Robertson and Jack Lisowski, while he is also seeking a 27th ranking event title.

A reminder of the afternoon's action

The two players split the first four frames, but Trump started to run away with things after the mid-session interval, winning three in a row. It felt like Si needed to take the eighth to have any chance of getting back into things, and he did just that, although it was an action-packed frame that lasted for in excess of half an hour.

Good evening!

Hello and welcome to tonight's coverage from the German Masters final! It's set for a tense finis with just two frames separating our two finalists. It's 5-3 in a race to ten!

Latest: Trump 5-3 Si

We will be back at 6:45pm with the conclusion of this year's German Masters final in Berlin as Judd chases a record third title win at the Tempodrom tournament, while Si hopes to mount a recovery in his maiden ranking final. Thanks for joining us today.

Trump 5-2 Si (26-70)

Si plays a solid snooker behind green and blue and Judd has seen enough of this frame. A relief for Si, who trails 5-3 after the first session. A frame lasting well over 30 minutes falls to Si. And Judd holds a 5-3 lead. Halfway to victory, but plenty more drama to come this evening as Trump bids to add to his victories this season at the English Open, Wuhan Open and Northern Ireland Open.

Trump 5-2 Si (26-70)

Well, Si tries to run wafer-thin off red from distance. Twice misses and Trump comes back to table to wriggle home a mid-range red. What a steal this would be. But Judd misses black off the spot chasing the counter clearance. Could have been a healthier lead, but Si is going to scramble home to trail 5-3. Stll in the ball game then before they play to a finish tonight.

Trump 5-2 Si (11-62)

Judd coming up with some excellent safety play when he needs it most. Keeping the pressure on. Trump goes for a red to left middle. Doesn't drop, but Judd has covered the red by the pink. Clever thinking. Si tries to run safe off a red, but ends up holing white in yellow bag. Another chance handed to Trump as Si shakes his head. Trump then misses a thin cut on red to left centre. And white goes down the yellow pocket. Judd misses the thin cut on red for a second time. Lots going on. Si needing one more red.

Trump 5-2 Si (2-54)

Five reds left up as Si adds another 11 points to his total. Trying to scrape over the line here anyway he can to reduce the deficit to two frames. Judd with another excellent safety shot to keep the pressure on Si.

Trump 5-2 Si (2-43)

This has been superb from Si in response to remain at the table. Very cool and composed as he sets about this break. But he then makes a big error by potting blue at pace with reds in open to lose position on 43 and compounds the mistake by throwing in a nightmarish safey shot. Judd handed another easy opener.

Trump 5-2 Si (1-14)

Si continues to knock in long-range reds, but it has not been his game from distance that's been the issue today. Cue ball control the key difference so far. Another cracking red from Si with screw to get across table for the blue.

Trump 4-2 Si (77-32)

Huge final frame of the session coming up. Trump trying to move four frames ahead in the race to 10. Si not cashing in on the chances that have come his way and has paid a heavy price for it.

Trump 4-2 Si (67-17)

In goes the black Judd needs to leave Si needing a snooker. A break of 52 this time. Two snookers needed otherwise this final is heading 5-2 to Trump.

Trump 4-2 Si (36-17)

And Si again comes up short among the balls. Tries to ram in a green at pace, but well off the potting angle and he has left Judd another golden chance to mop up these balls. Si being punished for wrong shot choice at wrong time.

Trump 4-2 Si (15-1)

Well, would you believe it. Si slams home a long red, but ends up connecting with the black and it flies down the opposite top bag. But Judd misses a toughish red to left centre seconds later to hand Si another go at these balls. Another big visit coming up.

Trump 3-2 Si (82-0)

Red stays out on 82, but that is more than good enough for Judd to claim the sixth frame for a 4-2 advantage. First time in this final that he has built a two-frame lead. He needs one frame of the remaining two in this session to secure a lead ahead of tonight's second session.

Trump 3-2 Si (55-0)

Delightful shot by Judd to roll in pink before clipping open the pack of reds. Every chance of a frame-winning contribution in one hit. Magical level of play.

Trump 3-2 Si (35-0)

Trump seeing some yardage in this break. White up and down the table with some gusto as he reaches 25. Can't say this is not entertainment.

Trump 3-2 Si (11-0)

A blistering red by Trump is powered in at the outset of the sixth frame. What a lovely long red that. Chance for Judd to get his scoring boots on again here. Working the white ball to some effect. Cue power is outstanding.

Trump 2-2 Si (96-3)

A rapid little cameo knock of 45 from Judd to go with the earlier 51 and Trump again edges clear in this final for a third time.

Trump 2-2 Si (51-3)

Trump not in complete control of the cue ball, but coming up with the goods via some stunning recovery pots. Can't split the pack off green and is forced to declare on 51. Si sees a cross double on a red drop, but he then misses the pack of redw on the left flank off yellow. Trump produces a telling safety shot by covering all the reds. Si hits a red, but has left Judd right in among the balls. Glorious chance to move 3-2 up.

Trump 2-2 Si (14-0)

Trump opts to try a double on a red, and it flies into the left centre pocket without touching the sides. Judd gets first go at these balls in the fifth frame.

Trump 2-2 Si (0-0)

Off we go then for another four frames of this absorbing final. Will someone have a lead heading for tonight's second session?

Trump 2-1 Si (31-77)

Chance of snooker missed by Trump, and Si teases the final red into right centre pocket. That will do the job for Si, who heads for a cuppa at the break level at 2-2. One hour and 13 minutes, and this German Masters final is delicately poised.

Trump 2-1 Si (31-69)

Quality response from Si. Fair enough, he was presented with chance to weigh in with a heavy knock, but these balls still needing potting. Breaks down on 60. And Judd needs a snooker here. But still life in this frame after Si misses a red to right middle. "Safety shot would have been more the order of the day there," says Alan McManus in the comms box.

Trump 2-1 Si (7-21)

Si misses a tough red to right middle, but he returns to the table seconds later as Trump is so unfortunate to see a plant on reds disappear after opening up pack via blue. Now then. Key visit to the table coming up for Si. Every chance to make a decent break.

Trump 1-1 Si (80-6)

Looks like Trump is going to restore his lead at 2-1. Si not mindful of his cue ball in baulk and Judd punishes him by carting a terrific long red down a top pocket. Si can't afford to make safety errors, or he will be punished in this final. Exhibition red down the side rail and into the green pocket to finish off in style. One more frame before the mid-session break.

Trump 1-1 Si (50-6)

But he misses a testing red using the rest, and that will be a reprieve for Si in this third frame. Seven reds left on table.

Trump 1-1 Si (46-6)

Fine recovery pot on a red to right middle by Judd to keep the break going. And the crowd are loving every moment of that. Inching towards the winning line in frame by potting some wild and wonderful reds.

Trump 1-1 Si (22-6)

Trump with a slight error from the break-off, but Si can't punish as he follows up a fine opening red by seeing white disappear down left centre bag after potting black. He then throws in another bad mistake by clipping pack of reds too thick and white races down a top pocket. How costly is that going to prove with Judd drilling home a long red.

Trump 1-0 Si (7-106)

A classy knock of 73 from Si, and this match is all level at 1-1. Black flies off table at end of frame, but no matter. Battle is joined.

Trump 1-0 Si (0-75)

A timely and fortunate snooker by Si gives him the upper hand in this second frame. Judd misses the red on the escape and leaves his opponent bang among balls. In goes a tricky pink, and suddenly this is an obvious chance to restore parity at 1-1 in this final. Fine response by the 21-year-old Si.

Trump 1-0 Si (0-29)

What a thumping shot on a green by Si to ram it down the yellow bag. And comes back down table for red. Fearless piece of potting, but he can't keep break going as lead moves to 29 points.

Trump 1-0 Si (0-14)

Only 14 from this first visit of the second frame. It is fair to say, Si is going to have to up his scoring to be dangerous in this final.

Trump 1-0 Si (0-7)

First blood to Judd then in this final battle. Si can't get the snookers he needs, and that is a 1-0 lead to the favourite. Si breaks off in the second frame. And is handed first chance after Judd rattles a long red in the jaws of a top bag.

Trump 0-0 Si (75-53)

Si manages to hit the yellow on the fourth occasion, but leaves it to top right-hand pocket and Judd slots yellow and green to leave his opponent chasing a snooker. Trump then slams in the brown. Surely a done deal now. A lead of 27 points with 18 left up.

Trump 0-0 Si (62-48)

Si with several chances to get opening frame won, but misses a yellow from mid-range after slotting red and tough blue. He is then dropped in a snooker by Judd with colours all over the show. Si twices misses the yellow, hitting pink the second time as lead moves to 14 points.

Trump 0-0 Si (52-42)

A stunning pot on the penultimate red down a side rail, but he can't land ideally on final red, and misses it across table. A big chance for Si wasted. Looks like a red-ball frame with colours all on their spots.

Trump 0-0 Si (52-35)

Delightful shot by Judd to slot black to left middle before opening up two reds, but he then misses a tricky red to right centre. DIdn't expect that. Frame looked a done deal, but Si lives to fight another day here.

Trump 0-0 Si (33-29)

Judd is seeing the ball superbly well this week. In goes a long red, and he is up and running here with pink dropping and white opening up a few reds at same time. Lovely control of the white ball. What is he going to produce here?

Trump 0-0 Si (0-29)

Well, what a reception for both men. Over two thousand fans packed inside the Tempodrom for this final Sunday. Must be one of the greatest venues in the world of snooker. If not the best. Error by Trump from the break-off shot, and presents Si with chance to get hand on table. Bangs in a mid-range red and lands nicely on black. Eight frames to be played this afternoon. Tries to split pack via pink off black spot, but nothing doing and just the safety shot to follow.

Trump 0-0 Si (0-0)

Trump yet to taste defeat to Si, winning all four of their previous meetings since 2019, but this is the first time they do battle in this length of match before a full house in Berlin. Is likely to be quite the contest.
