World number 77 Lu Ning made breaks of 61, 79 and 69 with world number 11 and 2005 world champion Murphy contributing 83 and 59 before losing the last two frames as Lu secured a meeting with Oliver Brown.

World number 22 Yan Bingtao produced some of his very best form in a 4-1 victory over Robin Hull.

Hull opened with a run off 77. but former Northern Ireland Open finalist Bingtao made runs of 78, 112 and 56 to progress to the last 16.

There was a 4-1 win for David Grace over Chris Wakelin while Daniel Wells completed a 4-0 drubbing of Peter Lines.
