The four-times world champion is a man in form having won the Australian Open at the outset of the season and continued his good work to move nearer the prospect of lifting the sport's fourth richest tournament in Daqing that carries a first prize of £125,0000 and a prize fund of £657,0000.
The Scotsman will equal Steve Davis' haul of 28 ranking tournaments win and one ahead of Ronnie O'Sullivan to move joint second behind Stephen Hendry's 36 on the all-time list if he succeeds this week, and is certainly looking in the mood.
His reward is a meeting with Joe Perry in the quarter-finals on Thursday after the Englishman edged out Ben Woollaston 6-5.
Neil Robertson was a 6-1 winner over Graeme Dott in a repeat of their 2010 World Championship final with Australia's world number four Robertson running in 67 and 56 on his way to securing a meeting with Mark Selby in the quarter-finals.
Selby was a 6-3 winner against Welshman Michael White, whose countryman Ryan Day could not emulate his previous day's success in ousting Ding Junhui 6-5.
Day lost 6-4 to David Gilbert, who meets Marco Fu in the last eight after the former UK champion enjoyed a 6-3 win over Jimmy Robertson.
Chinese representation in the tournament is over after Thailand's Thepchaiya Un-Nooh edged out Zhou Yuelong 6-5.
Northern Irishman Mark Allen - who lost last year's final to Ricky Walden - was later a 6-1 winner against China's Tian Pengfei.
