An emotional Ebdon told Eurosport after the win that "there are so many great players who have won both the UK and world championship and now I've joined that select group."
"I'm over the moon."
"I've worked ever so hard for this tournament I had so many tough matches. Mark Selby played very well against me&hellip and the game against John Higgins with unbelievable."
He then went on to dedicate the win to his family before breaking down in tears.
Hendry was full of praise for the winner but bemoaned his own poor, nervy performance:
"Tonight I picked the one day of the week when I didn't want to play like that," he admitted to Eurosport.
"For some reason I couldn't put a long ball in and I really struggled."
"Sometimes it just happens, Peter didn't play that well either - we've both had better matches but it's about how you win them."
The opening session of the day finished at 4-4 but 38-year-old Ebdon came out fighting as Hendry's game collapsed in the second session to fall 8-4 behind.
Hendry was clearly angry with his game and took his time to come out after a break in play and fo for a while it looked like he may emulate last week's oppponent Ronnie O'Sullivan in retiring for the match.
But the Scotsman fought back to 8-6, including one break of 116, and it looked as if he may complete a remarkable fightback.
Ebdon, however, was not to be denied and put together runs of 43 and 70 in the final two frames to add the UK title to the World Championship he won four years previously.
