UK Championship snooker 2020 - Judd Trump holds off Kyren Wilson charge to make semi-finals

Judd Trump held off a spirited fightback from Kyren Wilson to make the last four of the UK Championship at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes. Wilson fought back from 3-0 to level the match at 4-4 but Trump showed resolve to progress 6-4. The Bristolian will face Lu Ning in the semi-final with Neil Robertson facing Yuelong Zhou on the other side of the draw.

Judd Trump will play Lu Ning in Saturday’s UK Championship semi-final after beating Kyren Wilson 6-4 in the quarter-final at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.
The Bristolian raced into a three-frame lead on the back of some sublime snooker that produced runs of 73, 102 and 106, but a Wilson fluke in frame four reset the momentum, allowing the Kettering cueist to get a frame - wholly against the flow of play - on the board ahead of the mid-session interval. Ronnie O’Sullivan, in his role as pundit, called Trump the Tiger Woods of snooker during the break such had been his dominance.

However, Wilson, buoyed by his pre-interval fortune, emerged reinvigorated and hit breaks of 64 and 88 to reach parity at 3-3 and then 4-4 to send the quarter-final to a three-frame shootout, but Trump showed his resolve to win the next two frames - claming frame nine courtesy of a 71 and frame 10 with runs of 63 and 55 - to seal his progression. The 31-year-old will face Lu in Saturday’s semi-final.
“I started off well and put him under a lot of pressure,” Trump told Colin Murray in the Eurosport studio after the match.
I felt confident and felt I could win the match easily but then the fluke turned things on its head. It was incredible, one of the best flukes you will ever see - because at that point it was 4-0 [if Wilson had not fluked the red] and it was game over. From there it became a little bit of a slog.
The fluke undoubtedly set in motion a swing in momentum. Trump had looked on the cusp of eviscerating his opponent up until that point, but Wilson capitalised on his moment of fortune to make a contest of it, winning three frames on the bounce to put the match in the balance.
However, within that run of three frames, Trump served notice of his brilliance, producing a pot – in frame six - that was reminiscent of one of the most-talked about shots in the history of snooker: Alex Higgins’ iconic blue against Jimmy White in the 1982 World Championship.

Wilson would go on to win that frame but Trump would rally late on to secure an eighth win in his 17th match against Wilson as he continues his quest for a second UK Championship title.
