Judd Trump completed a rousing 13-9 win over Ricky Walden after winning the final five frames from 9-8 behind in the last 16 at the Crucible.
The 2011 finalist looked in trouble when he lost the first frame to Walden, but produced some of his very best form to win five straight frames with breaks of 66, 70, 66 and 103 more than enough to secure a meeting with John Higgins in the quarter-finals.
“John Higgins is a little bit older now, but if he keeps his consistency and plays like he has done then I’ll have to play the best snooker of my life to get close to him," said Trump.
"I’m hoping he has a bad day or a bad session, which he hasn’t had so far. I’m growing into the tournament now so hopefully I can use the confidence I have built and take the game to him.”
It was Higgins who defeated Trump for the last of his four world titles six years ago, and their latest confrontation could be a Crucible classic with Higgins enjoying a 13-1 win over Jack Lisowski with a session to spare on Sunday to advance to the last eight.
Having struggled to overcome debutant Chris Wakelin 10-9 in the first round, Trump was at his imperious best against Walden as he progressed over six hours and 36 minutes making 13 plus 50 breaks including four tons.
Third seed Ding Junhui completed a 13-4 win over Anthony McGill, winning the frame he needed having led 12-4 overnight.
Ding will meet Barry Hawkins in the last eight on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The final quarter-final spot will be decided on Monday evening as Mark Williams finishes against Robert Milkins holding a 10-6 lead in the race to 13.
