It’s rare to see a ball roll off its line these days in snooker but Luca Brecel had the misfortune of a red curling to the right in the 10th frame of the World Championship final against Mark Selby. Eurosport commentators Philip Studd and Joe Johnson were amazed at what they saw. Selby was not able to capitalise so it didn’t have a massive impact on the match, but it was certainly unusual.

‘It’s dipped to the right!’ – Red deviates from its line for Brecel

Luca Brecel had a big slice of misfortune in the 10th frame of the World Championship final when a red to the middle deviated from its line against Mark Selby.
Brecel took on a tricky red to the right middle when the object ball rolled off the nap, which refers to the direction the cloths on the tables are brushed.
It used to be a common theme decades ago when cloths were thicker but is a rare sight on modern tables and initially proved costly for Brecel, who was on a break of 27.
“It’s dipped, it’s dipped to the right,” said Eurosport commentator and 1986 world champion Joe Johnson.
Philip Studd added: “That’s incredible because that’s the first time in the championship I have seen it do that. Normally it holds its line with so little nap on these simplified cloths. That was old-school Joe, that was back in your day."
Johnson replied: “You could see it moving, it didn’t hold its line. It did in the other pocket, in the left middle it held its line.
“They did used to drop to the right when we used to have nap on the tables.”
Luckily for Brecel, Selby missed a red and The Belgian Bullet capitalised with a superb break of 99 to move 7-3 ahead.
The final concludes on Monday at 13:00 and 19:00, with every shot live on Eurosport and discovery+.
