Kyren Wilson missed out on the maximum break prize in the first session of his semi-final against David Gilbert on Thursday. Wilson was forced to share the award for highest break and maximum break of the tournament with Mark Selby last year. Wilson ended Thursday tied at 4-4 with Gilbert heading into the second session, which resumes on Friday.

'Thank God Mark Selby is out this year' - Crowd erupts with laughter after Wilson quip

Kyren Wilson delivered a cheeky quip towards Mark Selby as he headed towards a maximum break in his World Championship semi-final against David Gilbert.
Wilson was on his way to a 147 after potting 11 reds and 11 blacks before running out of position on the 12th and seeing his run end on 88 after a tricky red to the middle pocket.
The 32-year-old ultimately missed out on a £40,000 prize for a maximum break, which followed on from losing out to Mark Selby for the £55,000 on offer for the highest break and maximum break of the tournament 12 months ago.
Wilson landed a 147 against Ryan Day in last year's tournament, and thought he had secured the cash prize until Selby matched that feat in the final against Luca Brecel to ensure the spoils were shared.
The man known as ‘The Warrior’ reflected on that turn of events as he progressed to 73 and an ultimately failed attempt to reach the 147 in Thursday’s first session against Gilbert.
"Thank God Mark Selby is out this year," he said aloud to the crowd.
However, complacency may have set in for the five-time ranking champion and he was left to rue an opportunity missed.
"What a wally," he added after the session.
“My brother told me off. You want to perform for the crowd and that’s why I tried for a cheeky 147. It would have been so special to make it in front of my boys."
Wilson also revealed the way in which he discovered that Selby had matched his 147 exploits in an interview with the Daily Star before the tournament.

‘What a fluke’ – Wilson benefits from ‘incredible’ slice of luck early in semi-final

“I was at a bottomless brunch with my wife,” he explained.
“I’d had a few too many celebrating my maximum and ended up in bed for 9pm. I woke up the next day to about 20 missed calls. I had loads of messages but the one I saw first was from Shaun Murphy and had one of those emojis with the covered face.
“I thought ‘what’s happened here,’ so I clicked on them, and it was like ‘Selby has had a 147!’ It was the worst hangover I’ve ever had! Selby cost me almost £30,000.”
