With the score at four frames all, Carrington - who had led 3-1 and 4-3 - missed a yellow to allow Bingham to take the 5-4 win.
“My concentration was all over the place in the first four frames. I played a bit better to get it back to 3-3,” said Bingham. “I’m just thankful to get over the line.”
Ding Junhui was run close by Michael Georgiou, but eventually triumphed 5-3 with a break of 117 in the final frame.
World champion Mark Selby secured a resounding 5-1 win against Jimmy White, who took the first frame with a break of 74, but could do nothing to stop his opponent after that.
Shaun Murphy beat Sanderson Lam with an equally comprehensive result, as did Mark Williams against Andrew Higginson.
Alan McManus won four consecutive frames to beat Jamie Cope 5-3 - and was incredibly relieved to do so.
“The last time I was in China I lost 5-4 from 4-1 up so I know what can happen,” said McManus. “It would have been a sore one to lose after travelling all this way, so it’s a nice bonus to win.”
Xiao Guodong shocked Stephen Maguire, beating him 5-4; and Marco Fu was knocked out 5-3 by Sam Craigie.
“It’s nice to do it so early on in the season. To get a scalp like that gives me confidence for the future,” said 22-year-old Craigie. “I missed a few and could have won a bit more easily. I’m just glad I got the win.”
Indian Open winner Anthony McGill beat Lee Walker 5-1, and Kyren Wilson was pushed hard by Zhang Yong, eventually winning 5-3.
Meanwhile, David Gilbert put together breaks of 100, 69 and 127 as he defeated Rod Lawler 5-0.
Barry Hawkins came back from 4-2 down against Robbie Williams to take a 5-4 win and a place in the last 32, where he will face Ryan Day, who beat Allan Taylor 5-1.
Michael White crashed out in the first round against Norway's Kurt Maflin, losing a 4-2 lead to eventually fall 5-4.
